VideoStudio Wish List for Future Versions

Every so often I have contact with a Ulead employee or software engineer regarding new versions. It is always handy if I can point them to a thread such as this.
Please keep any suggestions sensible - plus this is not a place to complain about what YOU may consider to be bugs or faults. Those items should be placed in a new thread or tagged onto an existing one dealing with that same issue.

I too would like to see subtitle and commentary tracks added to this program. Commentary tracks are becoming more popular. I never used to listen to them but then after hearing some of the hilarious ones on Stargate SG1/Atlantis and Doctor Who dvds, it really got me into them.

I know that everyone asks for them, and that the standard answer is the VS is an editing program and you should buy Workshop 2, however most people don't want to fork out that amount of money on a piece of sofware that hasn't really been updated in quite a few years and can't handle HD.
If it isn't being updated, then I would think it reasonable that some of it's features would filter down gradually to the other software.
New menu templates, sound effects etc are all very nice, but if you want people to keep upgrading, then you need to offer other significant improvements as well. After using the program for a while, many users make their own customised menus anyway.
One of the things that I have seen people complain about some HD/Blueray disks, is that apart from picture quality, there is no significant change in the amount of extras etc. This of course is a commercial decision, meaning that people who want them have to buy directors cut, special edition and ultimate edition versions in the future.
Ulead has a good piece of software in video studio but to make it stand out from other software like the forthcoming Pinacle Studio 11, it needs to offer something better. Ulead can write new generation dvds, but what is the point if you cannot take advantage of the massive disk space that this allows. Most users will probably be hobbyists or budding film makers whose video on it's own wouldn't come anywhere near to filling a hi-def dvd, unless you give them the ability to explore other advantages of the medium like multiple soundtracks and subtitles. I remember when if you went into somewhere like Blockbuster, they had a seperate shelf for videos that were subtitled, there were very few. Then came closed captioning, which was ok if you could afford a decoder. Now with dvd pretty much all dvds have the ability to show subtitles whether for a different language, or for the hard of hearing (these can also be good, if for some reason you have to watch with the sound turned down). This is now what I would call a basic function of a dvd. That no entry or mid level software seems to cater for this is almost criminal.
Until a time when these things become standard in software we will be forced to burn multiple disks, or multiple versions of our videos onto the same disk.
Even a plug-in that added one commentary track and one subtitle track at an additional cost for VS would be better than nothing and no, a voice over/narration track is for voice overs; a title track is not for subtitles you cannot switch them on or off.

Just looked at the feature list for VS11. Looks like we got the subtitle track, although if you are creating one from scratch, you may have to do it in another program and then import it.
This just made it worth the upgrade from version 9.
Hopefully this time next year in version 12, they will have added that commentary track!

Seperate the alpha channel from an overlay video and output just the alpha info to an AVI file (for external apps that don't support 32-bit AVI files).

The ability to save libraries in a seperate folder that can be imported into future versions or reimported if something goes wrong. How many of us have had to do a clean reinstall because of some pesky bug only to lose our precious libraries and had to recreate them? And I'll say it again, More transitions or a package that is optional. Long time users get tired of the same old transitions. If you've used as many versions as I have, surely you know what I mean. Take some notes from Pinnacle's Hollywood FX. I started using VS when it was just a pup and there have been many improvements, but they should be a little more major when an upgrade costs so much. V 11 is no more that some tweaking done to 10 that really should have been done as free patches!

That would be nice indeed. One other thing I would like is some more library management options. If I could only sort the libraries by name I would be very happy (actually, not being able to do so now is verry irritating).

You can sort within the libraries by name or by date by clicking on the Sort Clips button above the clips.

More title tracks, since i treat title tracks like video clips and want to sync multiple titles to different concurrent events. Also one more sound track.
Shake filter, the opposite of the anti-shake filter, adds a little rumble to your video for shocking events.
For overlays, allow them to be treated like video tracks instead of introducing a weird new feature set. Also, give snap options like you do with titles (snap overlay to the left, middle of the screen, right, top, etc...) and the ability to restore to the original size of the image (currently, when you drag an object to the timeline, it stretches to fill the whole screen, and with small objects that looks really bad) or fill the whole screen.
As someone mentioned earlier, more DVD options, like simple dvd playlists.

You can have multiple titles per title clip.

I believe you can snap overlays (right click or Preferences).

You can restore images to original size (right click or Preferences).

I would like to export in FLV in one step.

I create much embedded help. Currently to insert a talking body over a web page I need to run my video through multiple products.

Record greenscreen,
edit video,
export as .MOV with alfa channel
import into After Effects,
export as FLV with transparent background.

That would be awsome.

You can have multiple titles per title clip.

I know that, but what if you want to animate in a second title and sync it to a video while the other is still displayed. To sync the second title it to a video event, you have to mess around with animation delay options. It would be much easier to be able to drag and drop titles around the same way you do with video.
