Lens profile in db but says Uncalibrated Lens underneath
Many of my lenses and cameras are in the ASP db list shown in the Detail tab under Lens Correction, but when I select some of them it says Uncalibrated Lens underneath. For example, if I load a raw file from my Sony A700 shot with the Sony 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 they are both in the db, but it says Uncalibrated Lens underneath and the distortion is not corrected. The lens is shown in the list so what is the problem? If it isn't calibrated then why is it in the list?

Re: Lens profile in db but says Uncalibrated Lens underneath
The list shows lenses that can be identified. That does not not necessarily mean there is calibration information.
Grab the latest Hugin, shoot some straight lines and calibrate it yourself.

Re: Lens profile in db but says Uncalibrated Lens underneath
afx, thank you for your reply. I have read the relevant section of the ASP manual and it implies what is in the list are calibrated lenses:
The Database tab is used when you want to correct your images based on camera and lens profiles built into Corel AfterShot Pro.
It seems totally pointless to have uncalibrated lenses in the db. I have used PTLens for years and it only shows the lenses that are calibrated. Lightroom is the same, it doesn't show a bunch of uncalibrated lenses.

.....afx, You said, "grab the latest Hugin, shoot some straight lines and calibrate it yourself"
I've some lenses I would like calibrating myself instead of waiting, maybe forever.
I am aware it can be done, I've been a Bibble user since 2006, but have never done it. Isn't there a procedure written on the old Bibble board somewhere that explains the procedudre?
Thanks,

The entry for your lens is in 'profile_konicaMinoltaSLR.txt
This is the relevant part of the file
Code: Select all
begin lens
group: minoltaSLR
multiplier: 1.0
aperture: 3.5
calibrated: false
menu_lens: Sony AF DT 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3
cal_abc: 18 0.00 0.00 0.000000
cal_abc: 250 0.00 0.00 0.000000
end
From which we can deduce, there is an entry for the Lens in the DB (as you know) and Bibble/Corel have yet to calibrate that Lens.

R.

Nope, not the one I am referring to.B Brennan wrote:.....afx, You said, "grab the latest Hugin, shoot some straight lines and calibrate it yourself"

Older procedures are referenced here: http://support.bibblelabs.com/forums/vi ... 7&start=15
But when you download the latest version of Hugin, there is an extra tool for lens calibration included. It only needs a few straight lines in the image and in contrast to all the other methods described, it can autodetect them...
Now the trick is to get images with usable straight lines across them. I don't have enough glass front buildings round my home to play ;-(
So my experiments failed so far. Bernd had excellent results by just setting up some straight wires on his lawn and shooting that...
cheers

Re: Lens profile in db but says Uncalibrated Lens underneath
tnx afx, much appreciated
Another question re: lens_profiles ... MAC OS-X -- I find no lens profiles folder or file in either AfterShot Pro or Bibble 5 directories.
Am I looking in the right place? /usr/boBBrennan/library/application support/AfterShot Pro/ I see all the other folders & files but nothing pertaining to lens
When I do a FIND for 'lens' nothing is returned

Re: Lens profile in db but says Uncalibrated Lens underneath
It is good that Bibble provides a way to add lens profiles that you make yourself. ASP is not Bibble though so it would be good, if this is the official way for ASP users to make and add lens profiles, that Corel document it and make it official with complete instructions.
While I could make my own profile for the lenses I currently have that doesn't help with the thousands of photos I have made with lenses which I no longer have. Almost all my lenses/digicams are shown in the ASP list so it is very deceiving when I discover that while most of them are in the list there is actually no profile for them. One is left to ponder what purpose is served by having a very impressive list of lenses that appear to have profiles when in fact many do not have profiles?

The following lens is in the profile_genericSLR.txt file:

end
In ASP I select:
Sony
A700
Tamron AF 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro
ASP says that it is an uncalibrated lens. The A700 is a 1.5 crop factor DSLR. Just for grins I tried this:
Nikon SLR
D300
Tamron AF 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro
The Nikon D300 is also a 1.5 crop factor DSLR. This time it works.

Tamron AF 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro
The Nikon D70 is also a 1.5 crop factor DSLR. This time it again says the lens is uncalibrated.
I suppose something is wrong or missing in these lens profile files. I have not found any documentation on these files on the Corel website so that I can maybe fix it myself -- which shouldn't be necessary, but I am trying to get past this problem. Any hints would be appreciated.

It should look like this:

I'll have a play with this on my Win7 box and see if I can get it to work.
I have it working like this for my Pentax / Tamron combination.
