MF4 update: access DVD "freezes" system

I had exactly the same problem with MF4.
Here is what I did for a workaround:
1. Uninstall MF4 and delete the files in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\DVD folder.
2. Reinstall MF4 from the original CD.
3. Copy the files in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\DVD folder to a new folder.
4. Install update patches.
5. Delete (or move) the files from the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\DVD folder.
6. Move the original files (from step 3) back to the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\DVD folder.
I also uninstalled Ulead Data-Add
I am now able to author video-DVDs with MF4. I only create DVD-files on HDD and burn with a different program (CloneDVD2).
I hope this helps you.

Few days ago i sent Ulead support department a question about this problem. This is the abswet I got:
Kindly remove MovieFactory 4 in the Add/remove programs. After removing the program, go to this location and delete all folders:
"C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead DVD MovieFactory 4.0"
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead DVD MovieFactory\4.0"
"C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead DVD MovieFactory\4.0"
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\DVD"
Once deleted, restart the computer and reinstall the product.
After installing DVD MF4, download and install the 4.04 update found here:
http://www.ulead.com/tech/dmf/dmf_ftp.htm
Thank You
Haven't tried it yet.

I would remove all remnants of MF4 and for a re-installation
only install the main program.
Leave out "Quick-Drop"
Ulead "Data-Add"
Just install the main video program.
Depending on your system those are the programs most likely to have
some type of conflict because they install resident drivers that access
the hardware devices on the machine.
Also, with the working copy of MF4 that resides under "Program Files".
Make a backup of the working MF4 directory to another location.
After you try the update you can always rename the updated directory and
copy the original directory back to the "Program Files" directory.
Good luck,

I ran into the same issue with my DVD drives not working after installing MF4, which I recently purchased along with my upgrade to VideoStudio 9.
Anytime I try to access one my my DVD drives (Pioneer DVD-ROM or Sony DRU-530A DVD R/W), my computer just hangs. I have to force a hard reboot. In fact, the OS (Windows XP Pro) won't even start again unless I take the blank disk out of the R/W drive.
I've uninstalled MF4 and reinstalled with 4.04 as per the previous post, but still the same issue. In fact, even after removing MF4 completely, I still have the same issues with my DVD drives. Before anyone says that my DVD drives are bad, if I force a reboot on my old hard drive where I had VS8 installed, my drives work just fine. (My old hard drive is stating to fail on me, so I'm reinstalling to a new hard drive). These problems occured after installing MF4.

If you can get the computer to boot to the operating system.
Goto the "Properties" of the dvd drive(s).
Open "My Computer" (if you can).
Right-Click on the drive and select "Properties".
See if there is a tab called "Data-Add".
If there is Un-Check "Enable UDF recording on this drive".
Or, under Add/Remove Programs uninstall "Ulead Data-Add 2.0"
That program may be conflicting with other software on the machine.
Hope this helps,

With hopeful anticipation of looking like an idiot by trying your suggestion for something that I should have figured out myself, it didn't work.
When starting another program that uses the dvd burner, my computer just hangs and I have to force a hard reboot.
The odd thing is that if I have a blank dvd in the drive when the computer reboots, it will still hang at the loading windows screen (before my user account signs in).
Again, everything worked fine before installing MF4.
I'll try removing Data-Add and see what happens.
Thanks for your feedback!

I've seen that happen quite a few times when a blank disc is in one of
the cd/dvd's then XP doesn't start.
One on my machine runs ulead products with no problems.
If I have a blank dvd in the drive when booting it reboots or hangs.
So I take the blank out and all works well.
I also don't start ulead products or any authoring apps with any blanks installed usually.
I install the dvd when I'm ready to burn and the project is created
and saved.
Virus software also monitors the hardware devices in the machines.
A cd/dvd could have an infected boot sector or script file.
