getting media off DVD's and onto an editing program timeline

What do I need to do to get media off of a DVD (currently in VTS/powerDVD format) and into an AVI or MOV format?

I'm not sure if I can help but I can tell you how I transfer video from a DVD.

When I have old home movies on VHS tapes etc I use my stand alone Panny to record the VHS tape to the panny because it does good job. I then simply hook up a second dvd player using the S-video line to my computers capture card. Play the dvd and capture the video from my dvd. Thats it.

Try Nero Recode. You can remake any non copy protected DVD with the software.
