CD DVD PictureShow4 Installation Problem

Post by SuzyQ »

Hi and Happy New Year! I hope somebody might be able to help me out here. I downloaded the trial version and it worked fine so went on to download the full version. Now when I try to install it, I'm getting a message asking me for the folder containing the "layout.bin" file. I browsed through the temp folder where I assume this file should have been extracted to, but just can't seem to find it.

I did a proper uninstall of the trial version before I started up the full version so that shouldn't be the problem. I ended up reinstalling the trial version (and lo and behold) it had the required "layout.bin" file so I saved it elsewhere, uninstalled the trial again and attempted to reinstall the full version. It accepted the layout.bin file so I thought I was on my way, but then it went on to ask for the folder with the "data2.cab" file which was nowhere in my temp files. So same thing again with the trial version. That one worked too, but now it's asking about a "data3.cab" file and I've hit a wall.

Obviously it shouldn't be this difficult. I'm accepting all of the defaults where the program wants to install itself so I don't understand why it's not locating these mystery files. I did send a note off to tech support but with the holidays, I probably won't hear back for awhile.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions any of you may have.

Hi,

The installation of the registered version should have been "routine" so something definitely went wrong.

If you'd like to try sort of an abbreviated (or maybe "quasi" is a better word) "clean install"...

Uninstall DVD PictureShow 4
Delete it's directory (if it remains) in program files
Delete any reference to the program in C:\documents and settings\all users\application data\ulead systems\
Delete any reference to the program in C:\documents and settings\USERNAME\application data\ulead systems\
Clear cache (important!)
Reboot
Install registered version

If that doesn't do the trick, here are the instructions for a full "clean install".

You may or may not find all of these references as you go through the procedure. If this is the case, just do whatever is possible and move on the next step.

1. Launch Windows Explorer and go to tools\folder option\advance setting to check "show hidden files and folders".
2. Please clean first your hard drive: Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools then click Disk Cleanup. Choose the system drive to clean (ususally drive C) then click OK. Check all boxes for cleanup and then click OK to clean your hard drive.
3. Go to your Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and remove/uninstall PictureShow 4.
4. Go to "C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems"
5. Delete the folder for CD & DVD PictureShow 4.
6. Delete "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems" (***please don't delete if you have other Ulead programs installed)
7. Go to "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information". Delete the folder
"{1F6199F9-9BED-4B43-9E5C-8495086EE714}"
8. Click Start: Run: type "regedit", click Ok.
- Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\, please delete
{1F6199F9-9BED-4B43-9E5C-8495086EE714} folder if they are present
- Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ulead Systems\,please delete Ulead CD & DVD PictureShow 4 folder
- Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Ulead Systems\,please delete Ulead CD & DVD PictureShow 4 folder
9. Close regedit
10. Install CD & DVD PictureShow 4 again.

Let us know how it goes. When you have a minute, you might also fill out your "system profile" info in your web board profile. Just FYI, Ulead's tech-support response is usually 24-48 hours and as far as I know, they do not read or reply to the boards.

Thanks for your quick response Michael. I really appreciate it. I tried the quasi clean, then the full clean and still no luck. Then I got hold of a tech on the phone yesterday and he said I probably got a corrupted download, so I downloaded it again. (This is an 8 or 9 hour ordeal for me since highspeed internet isn't available in my area yet. :( ) Unfortunately, it's exactly the same thing.

I'm still waiting for a reply from online tech support but in the meantime, I'll call them again today and see if I get any further. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again for trying to help.

Hopefully you'll get some additional help from tech-support. PS4 isn't a bad program when all goes well. If things don't work out, Ulead's "DVD Movie Factory 4" includes all the features of PS4 (and more) or there are some similar apps such as Arcsoft "DVD SlideShow" or the highly respected Photodex "ProShow Gold 2.6", both of which offer trial versions. Just be aware, if you request a refund from Ulead they may withold a cancellation fee.

Thanks for the tips Michael. I'm feeling a little leary about downloading another Ulead product right now which is really too bad. I used VideoStudio 6.0 way back when I got this computer and loved it. Unfortunately I ended up with too many bugs on my computer so I reinstalled my windows XP which was great, but then realized I'd lost the VideoStudio CD. Remnants of the program were still there though so I wonder if this might be part of the problem. It's completely deleted now (I believe).

I recently downloaded the trial version of VideoStudio 8.0 but can't seem to get that up and running either. After doing the clean up you suggested, I thought I'd see if that one would now install but I'm getting the identical problem I had with CD/DVD PictureShow. Weird.

Another strange thing with both these products is when I get to the part of the install where it says to choose the country you live in or choose your standard, there are no countries on the list. Same with the agreement form. There's no agreement there but I can still choose to accept it or not.

The guy at phone support has no idea what the problem is either but says he'll look into it. I'm considering a total reformat of my computer but that seems like a lot of time and effort to get one program to run. Especially with all the Windows Updates and SP2 I'd have to download on dial-up.

If I have any luck, I'll be sure to post the fix here.

Well, I know I'm jumping a bit off topic here but...

I'm kind of a junkie when it comes to trying new programs but like yourself I'm concerned about installing things that might mess my system up beyond repair. One of the best software investments I've ever made is a program called Norton GoBack which allows you to perform a FULL system restoral with only 2 clicks. Unlike the built-in Windows XP restoral utility, GoBack gives you a 100% restoral to a specific time before an unwanted or bad program (or a virus, spyware, whatever) was installed. Whenever I try a new program and don't like it, I simply use GoBack to revert my PC to a previous time and it's literally as if the offending app was never installed. There are quite a few disc imaging programs available but the thing I like about GoBack is that you can use it whenever you want without giving it a second thought. It sets it's own restoral points automatically (in the background) and (based on my experiences) is totally safe. The only drawback is you are usually limited to a 2 or 3 day restoral time-frame as the program eventually overwrites old restoral points to make room for new. It's really worth some consideration, especially for those who experiment with complex video programs. Just my .02 worth ;-)

YAHOO! It Works! :D

The phone tech guy sent me this info and it works like a charm. Seems it just needed a little old fashioned kind of DOS command to get it to quit cleaning up the extracted installation files before I was done with them. Hope this helps somebody else out some day.
Please Insert Disk 1 That Contains the File layout.bin
Document ID: Q108192
Last Revised On: 3/14/2003

Problem
This message may also appear for different files (e.g., Please insert disk 1 that contains the file data2.cab).

More Information
In certain cases, the installation thinks the setup has completed before it really has and starts to do cleanup on the extracted installation files.

Fix
The -a and -deleter command-line options prevent the installation from cleaning up too early. Pass the -a and -deleter command-line options to the installation file through the command line. To do so, follow these steps:

Determine the location of the installation:
If the installation is being run from a CD, using Windows Explorer browse to the CD-ROM drive and locate the installation file. The typical names for installation files are setup.exe, update.exe, installer.exe, etc.

If the installation was downloaded from the Internet and saved to your computer (e.g., your Desktop), using Windows Explorer, browse to the location where you have saved the executable file package.

Copy the location and file name, for example:
C:\WINNT\Profiles\Administrator\Desktop\YourApplicationName.exe

Select Start > Run and paste or type the location and file name surrounded by double quotes into the Open field:

Add the -a and -deleter command-line options, making sure to have spaces before each '-':

Click OK. The installation should extract and run without errors.

Hey, that's pretty amazing! Congratulations :D

I'll definitely add that link to my Windows troubleshooting archive for future use.
