elle_girl,

Install your external capture device according to the instructions in the box. I'm assuming it uses a red, white, and yellow connector (better known as a "composite" connector) to connect to your camera. Your camera should have came with one of those to connect normally to a TV. Use that to connect to your capture device. Turn your camera on PLAY. Start VS9. Make sure your on the Capture tab and Select Capture Video. For Source, it should automatically see your device. If not select it. Choose your capture Format, either DV/AVI or MPEG. See the article Recommended Procedures for more information. As a matter of fact read that before capturing any video. Should you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask, someone here will help. ;-)

As you have a USB device Ellie I would suggest you set your capture format to MPEG or better still choose DVD so that you should have a compliant file when you come to burn your DVD.

As Ron said please keep coming back if you have more questions,

Almost without exception the front connectors on a VCR/DVD combi unit are signal IN only - to get a signal out you will need to use one of the SCART connectors on the rear I'm afraid. AND if you have one of those SCART to Phono adapters supplied with many camcorders you can't use that either as they are supplied signal IN also - you need a specific signal OUT cable or a switchable SCART adapter from your local Maplins.
