Crop Tool on VS 9 ??

Post by paul85 »

ULead's book, "digital Video Basics" (that came with my boxed VS 9) suggests I remove "noise" from left & right edges of the frame: "Cropping this noise out using crop tools in your NLE system will remove this noise" Is this possible on VideoStudio 9? Thanks in advance.

Yes, the crop tool is actually a Video Filter. Here how to use it:

1. On the right-hand side of the UI (just above the Library) click the little down arrow to open the Library menu, click on Video Filter.

2. Click-and-drag the Cropping filter onto your clip on the Timeline.

3. Select Customize Filter on the Options Panel.

4. Change the Width to 98% (you may need to change this based on the amount of noise you have).

5. Change the Height to 100%.

6. Select the Stationary checkbox.

You'll notice that there's a little red diamond on the left of a timeline. There is also a grey one on the right. These are called keyframes. Every video filter has a beginning keyframe and an ending keyframe. Plus you can add more if you like .

7. Click on the right (grey) keyframe to select it.

8. Change the Width and Height settings to match your first keyframe's settings.

9. Select OK.

That's it!

This tool can come in handy when your making DVDs of your old VHS tapes, which will have noise usually on the bottom of the screen. In this case you'll notice that there's a small cross-hair on the Original preview screen. Move the cursor over it and the cursor changes into a hand. Now you can nudge up a little so that your cropping only the bottom.

Happy editing,
Ron G.

P.S. The Cropping filter can also be used for special effects. See my Split Screen tutorial for more information:
