VideoStudio 9 teething problems

Post by JohnMeander »

I've just bought a JVC HDD camcorder together with VS9.
I cannot find a DV devise to connect it. Do I need a plug-in. I searched on the Ulead site but couldn't find one.

Any solutions, please!!!

You probably need the HDV plugin that you can download from www.ulead.com. It works with the Sony HDR-HC1 but I don't know if it will work with your JVC.

Just to clarify here: I understood your post to suggest you have a camera with a Hard Disk Drive (HDD), but John obviously understood it to mean High Definition (HDV). Can you clarify as the plug-in that John mentioned is for high definition machines.

As for connecting your camera to the computer, what does your manual say? Does the camera have a mini-USB 2.0 port (as I think it probably will)? If so, and it really doesn't have a Firewire port, then you probably only need to use the USB cable which should have been supplied. Given that it is a hard disk in the camera, if connected via USB 2.0, the your computer should simply see it as another, external hard disk drive and you only need to transfer the video, rather than capture it as such -- and USB 2.0 should be more than fast enough for this.

HDD

Ken - Thanks for your interest. The video camera is HDD. It came with a USB2 lead which I connected and which Windows Explorer recognises. But when I open Ulead programme and use the DV to DVD Wizard the Device Option is greyed out as is Start Scan. No pictures appear in the storyboard. What plug-in do I need?

I think the simple answer is that you can't use the DV-to-DVD wizard with your camera as the video is not coming from a mini-DV camera. Not many of us on this Board appear to use any of the wizards anyway, but use the main Editor.

Now I have no idea what the structure of the hard disk in your camera might contain -- whether for instance, each time you record a new scene, a new file is created. Or whether it is all just one big scene. But it should be in some video format that VS9 will recognise (and may even be DV, or possibly mpeg-2 -- in which cases there would be files ending in an .avi or .mpg extension respectively).

With the camera connected via USB, given that Windows can see the drive, VS9 should also be able to see it. So I think what you do is simply open VS9 in the Editor mode (the third choice on the opening splash screen), then right click in the library pane or in the timeline of VS9 and choose 'insert video'. Then direct the computer to the drive which it sees the camera as, and select what you can find on that drive which looks like a video file (i.e. with an avi or mpg extension). Sorry I cannot be more specific, but I simply have no idea how HDD cameras approach this particular question.

Hi John,

I done a quick search on Google for JVC HDD camcorders. I don't know what model of JVC yours is. You might provide that info. What I did find, is that JVC provides software(Cyberlink DVD Solutions) with the camcorders. The camcorder has a USB 2.0, S-Video, and RCA Composite jacks to connect to a computer. Is that correct about yours?

Camcorder Info.com

Some more Info on JVC Everio G Series

If VS9 will not rcognize your camcorder, you should be able to use the software provided to capture. However I'd think that using the USB2.0 you should be able to capture using VS9.

Thanks, Ken, for straightening out the JVC Hard Disk Drive...

John,
Can't you just drag or copy the contents of the JVC drive into your computer hard drive? Then you should be able to access it thru the VS9 library. I don't know what the video format will be. DV probably
