Getting Frustrated with Dolby Audio

Post by Eric VS9 »

I have be using Video studio since version 6 -7-8
and now 9 I do video transfers to DVD everything from
old 8mm film to VHS tapes I have made hundreds and Hundreds
of DVD plus and Minus played back on many many types of DVD player
cheap and expensive I am sure !

Final DVD Properties
NTSC (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Constant or Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio LPCM and MPG ( I switched to mpeg audio at times to add a little more playing time if needed)

VERY VERY LITTLE PROBLEMS

All DVDs have been created with one version of Video Studio mainly 7 and 8
no problem with skipping or playing problem just the odd Plus minus issue.

Since using Video Studio 9 I am getting
much less success 25-30 percent of DVDs wont play or skip ect.
the only difference is the Dolby audio Audio Bit Rate is 256

I have 3 DVD players in my shop all 3 play LPCM or MPEG Audio DVDs fine Only 1 will play Dolby audio the other 2 skip or the video jumps or has big digital noise ..

Does any one have any idea
I am getting frustrated and I am thinking of just using LPCM or MPEG Audio because I have
no idea what my customers DVD players are, and I need the MOST COMPATIBLE FORMAT for distribution

Thanks for any help

Hey Eric!

If you're in NTSC land (which you may be from your video output settings) Dolby ought to be the preferred compressed format.

I have a suspicion that all is not well with VS9 and Dolby audio, however. That will no doubt raise a storm of protest from those who firmly believe in theory rather than practice.

I trust you have the full VS9 - Dolby is not enabled in the trial version.

Hi I do have the full version

The thing that is bothering me
is there may be a problem because in the short time since I
joined this form I have read that
"YOU MUST HAVE THE PROJECT PROPERTIES MATCH THE FILE YOU WANT TO CREATE"
There is no way to add Dolby to the project properties it is LPCM or MPEG audio
and so is that causing the problem or is it the sample rate of Dolby does it have to be ?
128
160 ??? -256 - 448 ???

????????

For what it's worth - I speak from observation rather than knowledge.. :?

Commercial DVDs use Dolby - the sample rate is about 554 (I think). This is enough to cope with 5 tracks. We need 2..

I have purchased commercial DVDs dealing with old TV shows (MASH) which had only 2 sound channels. The sample rate on these is 192.

I also have MyDVD which I use for burning. If you select Dolby it will automatically give you 192 (no confusing choices :) )

Someone is telling us something.... I find 192 works just fine.

I carried out some tests with Smart Rendering a while back. I found that Smart Render worked even if you changed the audio bitrate or format - though of course since I only had the VS9 trial, I couldn't check out Dolby.

You may want to create dvd folders or an iso image file on the harddisk
and let Nero burn the dvd so you can use the Verify Feature of Nero.
