Recent problem with capture using VS9

Post by ewingc »

I am having trouble capturing from my Sony DV with VS9. Never had this problem before. I have tried reinstalling software, but no help. I can wath the video in the preview widow by pressing play, but capturing can actually make the VS9 prgram just quit at times when it gets so far behind. It is dropping frames like mad and you can see the time is jerking and skipping all over the place. I am using the same settings I always have, which are the ones recommended on this forum:

NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 16:9, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- NTSC, 44.100 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

I am using

Windows XP SP2
2.7 GHz CPU
512 MB DDR
nVidia GEFORCE2 MMX video card
50 GB Free on hard drive (defragmented)
IEEE firewire connection

The settings are set to DV in the drop down capture device.

registers Codecs show as

Dolby Digital - Full
MPEG-2 - Full

I seem to have this problem no matter what software I try to use (i.e Microsoft capture or VS8). Tried capturing using MPEG2 format, same problem. What could have caused it to have this problem all of a sudden. Codec corrupted or overwritten? Could there be a prblem with my firewire card. I really do not know where to go next? HELP!!!

If those are the only registered codecs you have, then you are potentially in trouble! Not sure which program you use to show your codecs, but G-Spot or Sherlock can be found via Google, and are free. There is a possibility that apart from the Dolby codec you mentioned, the mpeg one might also be, depending on how it is described in the program that detected it e.g. MPEG audio layer 2???

Anyway, for DV capture, you should at least be showing the (Ulead) Direct Show codec... If it is not there, then at the very least you should do a full uninstall and reinstall of VS.

No -- the one I am thinking of is there -- 'DV Video Encoder' and 'Decoder' qdv.dll

Not sure what more I can suggest. What is the exact model of your Sony? Did it come with any specific installation disc(s) of its own?

Ken,

This camera had worked fine just a couple of weeks ago with VS9. The only thing I have done differnetly in the last few weeks is set up a new office where I had to move my computer. And of course I may have installed some software over the last few weeks that could have overwritten something. Is there any way you know of to check to see if my IEEE card is causing the problem? Can I capture DV with a USB cable for instance? Any ideas are welcome? Why don't the codecs you are talking about show up under VS9. Do they on yours?

Recent Problem with Capture in VS9

Don't know if this will help you, but I have a Sony DV cam as well and was having the same identical problems. What I found I had to do before clicking on the capture icon, I had to go to the "Format" drop down above and slect "AVI", even though it will default back to "DV", I still had to initiate the "AVI" format first. After that, no more stuttering audio/vido and no more dropped frames. Hope this helps!

Could it be that the camcorder tape heads have become dirty?
You mention having moved your computer, It would also be worth checking that your IEEE1394 card hasn't worked loose, try taking it out and re-seating it.
