Failed to open MPEG encoder (2000:1:1)

Post by rguthrie »

I've been doing quite a bit of editing and burning lately. Basically converting recorded TV shows from my MediaCenter PC to DVD. Everything has been going great. Now all of a sudden I started working on a Christmas Concert project and tried to render 6 min. (I've multi-trimmed the 1 hour long video into the individual songs) of the show and got

Failed to open MPEG encoder
2000:1:1

I've tried several, various "fixes" and nothing has worked. I then tried to convert another TV show, because I know it was working, and I got the same error notice. So what's up?

Well, I solved the problem! I was thinking about what may have changed on my system to cause the MPEG encoder to stop working and then it hit me. My trial of Ulead VideoGraphics Lab 1.0 expired as so I dutifully unistalled it. Well it obviously took the MPEG encoder with it. The guys working on VideoGraphics Lab blew this one. The uninstaller should be smart enough to know if another Ulead product on being used. Needless to say a reinstall fixed the problem. Now it's back to work! :-D

BTW if you, like me, have the ESD version of VS9 make sure that you uninstall QuickTime if you have version 7 before installing VS. Otherwise, SmartSound Quicktracks will not properly install.
