VideoStudio 8: no sound when importing *.mpg files

Post by anuta »

I add an *.mpg file into my project using 'Insert Video' option.
The sound in the original *.mpg file is fine.
Than I drag this clip onto the Timeline, select it and ply it in the Previw window.
The video is fine, but there is no sound.
The 'Mute' is not checked anywhere.
If I later record this clip to the DVD disk, there is no sound there as well.

What can be the problem?

What kind of sound is on the MPG files?

MP2, AC3?

I'm not sure if VS8 supports AC3 sound, so maybe thats the problem.

No -- VS8 will not support AC-3 audio without a specific plug-in. And if your inserted video was ripped from a commercial DVD, then almost undoubtedly it involves AC-3.

Ulead charged US$29.95 for their own plug-in, though I am not sure it is available any longer. There was also a free plug-in which allowed you at least to capture AC-3 audio. But you then had to edit it into one of the other audio varieties (LPCM or mpeg) for production of your final disc. But instead of paying $29.95 for the Ulead plug-in, it is much more economical to pay $49.95 and upgrade to the -- IMHO (though not necessarily that of all people on this Board) -- much better program, which is VS9! And this of course includes the native capacity to handle dual channel AC-3.

Thanks for replies.

Is there any way to know what kind of sound is on my MPG files?

I have generated these MPG files from the DVD that were created using SONY DVD Handycam.
I used ImageMixer application to convert all the VOB files into MPGs.

All the Sony DVD cams use Dobly AC-3 sound recording so that will be your problem.
VS8 does not support that format alone, there was a plugin available for about $30 but better than that for about $50 you can upgrade to VS9 and it natively handles AC-3.

Yes, you were right - the problem was with AC-3 sound recording.
I have installed AC3 PowerPack Plugin and the sound is fine now.

But I see another problem now:
I try to create a DVD disk from my project.
When creating a disk menu, I add background music (*.mp3 file).
Than I click "Next" to preview the created project.
The result: the sound is ON when the disk menu is displayed (the mp3 that I added), but in the project itself there is no sound.

If I don't add a background music to the disk menu, the sound in the project is fine.

Do you know what I can do?

Have you tried converting your menu MP3 to WAV format? Video Studio appears not to like certain varieties of MP3.

I have not tried the conversion to WAV yet, but the interesting things are:

1. my MP3 music file is played fine when the disk menu is active
2. once the sound is disappeared from my project after the menu background music had been added, the sound disappears even for all new projects that I create in VideoStudio after that (even if I just insert a new MPG files into the timeline).

The only way to bring sound back is to uninstall and install again AC-3 plugin.

Where to get plug-in update?

Can anyone tell me where to acquire the AC3 PowerPack Plugin for VS8? I previously purchased it and am hoping for an update.
