Program shuts down when rendering

Post by danaram »

I have Video Studio 9.0. When I try to render my video projects or burn them to DVD, the rendering process begins, and then the program just shuts down without warning. (My computer doesn't crash or freeze). The project I am trying desperately to get burned right now is imported from a DVD (home movies that were burned to DVD from VHS), and does not appear to be corrupt in any way that I can detect ~ I can work with them fine in Video Studio and play them fine. (And I have experimented with a few other files from other sources and have the same problem.) I contacted tech support and was told to (1) reinstall VS 9, (2) download the latest burning engine, (3) close all running programs, and (4) make changes in my program compatibility wizard. None of these options worked. They did also tell me to try using different media, but I really can't see this being the problem since the program crashes during rendering ~ before it ever gets near a DVD. I thought it might be that I just didn't have enough RAM, so I added 512 MB more RAM (I had 512MB before, so I now have a Gig). I notice that the rendering appears to be going very slowly before it crashes - it seems that it would take many hours to actually render the one hour film. Is there some setting I am missing that will "magically" fix the problem? I have tried so many things, but am hoping it's just that I'm an idiot and there is some setting that I have wrong!! Here are my project settings:

File format: NTSC DVD
File size: 239,094 kb
Duration: 300.901 seconds (about 1 hr, 5min)
Video Type: MPEG-2 Video, Upper Field First
Total Frames: 9,018 frames
Attributes: 24 bits, 720x480, 4:3
Frame Rate: 29.97 frames/s
Data Rate: variable bit rate (Max. 4620)
Audio Type: Dolby Digital Audio
Total Samples: 14,443,243
Attributes: 48000 Hz 2/0 (L/R)
Layer: None
Bit Rate: 256 Kbps

And here is some info on my computer:
AMD Athlon XP Processor 2800+ (2.083 GHz)
Windows XP Home Edition
1 GB DDR Ram (PC2700)
VIA S3 UniChrome 3D Graphics

I'm not sure what programs can lead to incompatibility problems... I did check that I have the most recent version of Windows Installer, as I read that there were problems with that. I'm down to the wire, and I'm pretty sure I won't be giving this project as a Christmas gift as I had planned! ANY and all help is so very greatly appreciated!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

danaram,

Have you tried to see if you can render just a portion of the movie? How much disk space do you have? When is the last time you defragged your hard drive? Your project settings seem fine. Have you tried using a constant bit rate? Also, for only a 1hr, 5min video using a max bit rate of 4620 is really conservative. If you used dolby digital at 192Kbps you could use a CBR, or a max VBR, bit rate of about 7.9 mbps or 7900.

Yes, I have tried to render just a portion of the movie. I cut it down to just the first 15 minutes (thinking maybe I could just do 4 renders and piece them together), and had the same problem. I have had about 14 Gb of free disk space when I have tried to render ~ I think I can now free it up to about 28 Gigs to give it another go if that could be the problem. Haven't defragged the drive in a while, I'll try that (I did do a check disk a couple of days ago, thinking that might help). I also have not tried a constant bit rate or a higher bit rate. Thank very much for the suggestions! I will try them all and see what happens...

Danaram,
You listed your project properties and these look OK.

Does VS crash when you make a video file? Did you set its properties exactly the same as the project properties? If the answer is yes, try again but disable "Smart Render". Sometimes this will help.

BTW, you said you tried to burn but you should never do this (try to burn DVD directly from a project in the timeline) without a video file.

Danaram,

If you think something else is affecting your rendering then give the suggestions in the following post relating to the creation of a new profile a try.

It doesn't take long to set up and should speed up your system even if it doesnt cure this problem which it may.

Yes, VS crashes when I try to make a video file. I knew from the forum that you shouldn't try to go directly to burning a DVD, but I tried it when I couldn't get VS to make a video file (I know, silly, since you have to render as part of burning then, but I just had to try for lack of a better idea!). Yes, I set the properties to exactly those of the project. I also tried disabling smart render. I will try some more of the suggestions you have all so graciously given me when I am done weeping in the corner. Thank!!!
