VideoStudio 9 does not recognise capture source

Post by Arthur494 »

The VS7SE that arrived with my Terratec Grabster AV400 worked (almost) fine. But when I upgraded to VS9 I find that the only capture device listsed is "AVI Rage Theatre Video Capture"; it doesn't recognise the AV400, although it is listed as working OK in the device manager.

I have installed the AV9 patches and upgraded the AV400 driver; all to no avail.

Terratec directed me to a Ulead FAQ answer for AV8 which suggests unistalling AV7SE, then 'repairing' the newer version. It then goes on to admit that software downloaded from their website cannot be repaired!

Catch 22?

I can't be the first to have experienced this problem. Solutions gratefully received.

Try this not sure if it will work:
Loads Ulead Videostudio 9
Click Capture on the Top
Select your Source (TV CARD)
Click Options
Click Video & Audio Capture Settings
Under Source mess about with the video source and see if it picks it up

Let me know, hope it helped!!! :)

Go to the Videostudio 9 download page and try the Terratec update:

Thank-you for your suggestions.

"Messing about" with the source settings had no effect.

As indicated above, I had already installed the VS9 patches, including one for the AV400.

Following is the unhelpful reply from the Ulead people. In other words "you must use VS7SE for capturing and VS9 for editing and burning".

"Usually, most Terratec Grabster capture devices are hardware compression capture devices, VideoStudio 9 doesn't support these kind hardware codecs; it only supports "Video for Windows" and "DirectShow" capture driver. Only the software that came bundled with the device has the special capture plugin, which is installed by it's manufacturer for your device.

"You can use your VideoStudio 7 SE to capture the video then insert the clips into VideoStudio 9 (Edit stage) to edit. "

If you can not use VS9 to capture, and don't want to use VS7SE, how about a freebie, that works great for capturing via Firewire from a DV Camcorder?
WinDV is a great program to capture video in DV-AVI.

Further to Vidomans suggestion
How about Windows Movie Maker that is built into Windows XP,
Perhaps you could capture with that then edit with Video Studio.

I have persevered for about two months and made some good recordings using VS7 for capture and recording. I am unconvinced that the upgrade to VS9 was a good buy.

And I remain puzzled by the existence of: "Ulead VideoStudio 9 Terratec hardware devices support pack (Release Date: 2005/06/13)".

Can one of you clever souls explain to me please why this support pack exists when Ulead admit that VS9 does not work with the format produced by Terratec devices?

In great frustration,

Similar problem - Plextor PX-M402U and VS9 Trial

Post by synchmatrix »

I have had a similar experience--maybe with the same cause (not supporting compression capture device)?

I have a Plextor PX-M402U that I received last month. It works great with the supplied VS8SE software. I downloaded the VS9 trial, but LO! My capture device isn't recognized at all by the new software. I can't even select the options menu, since it doesn't see the device at all.

Is it me and my setup, or is it Ulead and VS9?

If this is indeed a non-support issue, it's a great way for Ulead to turn away potential buyers!

I also have the same problem with VS9 where my capture device is not recognized at all, so what I do is I use the software that came with my computer to capture video (Sony VGC-RA830G), and I use VS9 to edit ,and produce my dvds. Other than that, I have given up on trying to capture video with VS9.

Welcome to the forum :D
I bet you are using a USB lead!
Dump it and get an IEEE1394 firewire/i-link lead.
Do a search and you will find plenty of posts regarding this issue.
