Can anyone tell me what the difference is between these two audio filters that are available in VS9:
-Normalize
-Volume Leveling

Normalization increases the volume of the entire selection by a fixed amount, so that the peak level is set to the digital maximum ( 0dB ). If the peak level is -3dB, the entire selection will be increased by 3dB. If the peak is already 0dB, it does nothing.

It is generally a good idea to normalize. There is rarely a good reason to have a low-volume recording.

Most commercial CDs and DVDs are normalized, although not all tracks on a CD are always normalized... some songs are supposed to be quieter than others. A mellow CD and a heavy-metal CD will have the same peak levels, but the heavy metal CD will have much higher average levels.

Volume Leveling is Automatic Volume Control. It continuously adjusts the volume to keep it more constant. Most cameras have Automatic Volume Control built-in. This can be very helpful with live voice recordings, but it will distroy the "dynamics" of music and it will increase the background noise along with the sound during the quiet parts.

Excellent explanation, just what I needed. By name both of them seemed to be very similar and I still wasn't sure even after conducting some tests, so I appreciate your clarification.

Hi,
Normalize is a nice feature for people speaking in a video. Usually the
mic doen't pick up everyone so low voices will be increased to the level
of the louder voices.

Music shouldn't be normalized. You would normally raise the overall volume level of music by decibel steps.
Otherwise you will lose the dynamics of the music.

Alot of music today doesn't have any dynamics. It's simply full blast.

But you wouldn't want to normalize a recording of a jazz band or orchestra.
