DVD9 Dual Layer problems

Post by Peter »

This is the first time I have encounterd problems with Ulead.
I use Video Studio 8 and then DVD Workshop to create menu's and burn discs
I have just been trying out my very first Dual Layer DVD and because these discs are still expensive I decided to capture, render, Author and burn to HD first to make sure everything is OK before burning to DVD disc.
I have done this many times before with normal files & project without a problem.
However the files for a Dual layer disc is obviously much larger.
I capture without a problem (in MPEG), render without a problem but when I try to "Burn" in Workshop it only gets to 80% and gives me the Error 8004138c...what on earth is this.
Anyway I thought there may be a problem with workshop so I tried the same proceedure in Studio 8 to burn it and I got exactly the same Error .
I tried to reduce the file size and reduces it to only 2 hours where previously I had 3 hours thinking this may be a problem but it made no difference.
Also DVD workshop does not give any indication that I am trying to burn a DVD9 (Dual Layer) disc as it still only has the same dialog box showing 60 mins for High quality, 90 min for good quality ect.
this is not good .
At the moment there seems to be no way i can burn my project to DVD
can anyone help
Thanks

Please provide some information:

What burner model do you use?
What disc media and brand you use?
What version of DVD WorkShop you use?
Have you applied any updates and patches of DVD WorkShop??
What Windows version and hard disk file system do you use?

According to my information from Ulead, the error code 8004138c means some burning files cannot be created in your hard disk.

Please check if your working folder in DVD WorkShop is more than 18GB (if no create disc image file) or 27GB (if create disc image file and burn) if you want to burn an Dual-Layer DVD-9 disk. For burning DVD-5 Single Layer disk, you will need 8GB to 12GB for it.

Or check if there is any other programs running in the background which will lock your working folder, that will make some programs cannot create files.

Thanks HT for the info
Here are the details you requested:
Burner NEC DVD_RW ND 3500
Media Verbatim DVD+R DL (8.5GB)
DVD Workshop ver 2
latest updates + patches from Ulead web site including Burn Engine.
Windows XP Professional.
PC AMD Athlon 64 bit.
RAID Array 0 Striped
2x 150GB HDs

If you are correct in that there is a problem writing to the HD how do I know how big a file I can write to the HD?
how can I determine the size of the file I can write to the DVD.?

The only reason I wanted to write to the HD is so that I can test the final size and performance of the DVD before I write it .

Thanks
Pete

I don't know if this is applicable to your situation, but do you have third party packet writing software installed? A likely culprit is Nero's InCD which in my experience clashes with the built-in packet writer that comes with XP. I would often get a message or situation similar to yours, but after I uninstalled InCD, the problem seems to have gone away.

Further update

Post by Peter »

Hello again to both

I have tried everything you said HT but it still shows the error at 80% of Video & Audio multiplexing
Whether I try to create an image or write to HD or write to disc
I use NTSC file system (forgot to mention)

I also used "msconfig" to dissable all programs and services running but still get the same error.(see kens tip)

if there is a problem with the HD file size how do I check the "Allowed" file size in any folder ? I thought as long as my HD was big enough (300GB) I would not get problems .

however there does seem to be a problem with something like this as it always errors on 80% multiplexing dispite reducing the file size the error point remains the same ?

I await your further tips
Thanks for helping

Can you tell me the properties of your source files??

Some package writing tools might also be the problem, even after you use msconfig because they are running as system services and cannot be touched by msconfig.

update from Pete

Post by Peter »

Well I have some further information on this issue.
I have sucessfully written the Dual layer DVD by changing the capture settings and re capturing the film
I had origonally set the capture setting for MPEG on 8000kbps as advised on the forum.and this appears to be where the problem occourd because when I just left the capture setting on 6000kbps the ULead Default for PAL DVD MPEG the multiplexing video/audio proceeded without a hitch.
I do not know why this is any advice would be apreciated
Thank

I think the capture driver might have a drop-frame problem when you capture the MPEG video at 8000kbps, since it can work when you capture it at 6000kbps.

Maybe you can give this information back to the manufacturer of the capture device.

Thanks thats something I had not thought of.
I actually captured the file through a canopus AV100 to convert the old VHS tape into Digital.to feed to the PC through a 1394 port
So mabe Ill try to capture pure digital from my camera at 8000kbps what do you recon?
What difference is it capturing at 8000kbps as oposed to 6000kbps ? does it give better quality?

what do you mean with "capturing"...I think You mean encoding! Because when You capture with the canopus AV100 You will have a DV-AVI-Format on Your harddisk. Then You can encode this DV-AVI with a mepeg-encoder to an mpeg-2 format file.

I always work like this and I cannot understand why mpeg-encoding with 8000 Kbps should not work on a DVD-9. I could imagine that the problem lies in the separation point of the two layers. There is sth written aubout that in the manual of DWS2. The standard value for the separation point is 130310.

If You have no trouble with encoding with 6000 Kbps it might be the reason that it does not use the second layer of DWS.

Could probably someonbe from ULEAD answer this question precisely because in the manual it is written, that there cannot be written directely to a dvd-9 dual layer disk ?!?

burning error

Post by elpedro »

Hi,

i think that at 8000 kBit your project is bigger than is allowed for dual layer DVD. If the project will render and burn at 6000 Kbit than that is most likely the cause.

Maybe you could first render your AVI files to DVD compliant mpg files. Then you could check their length and you have a good estimate of your projects size.
