HI -
I have an installation of 9.0 working fine, except for processing AVI files. My firewire attached DV cam (sony) works great on my laptop.
My desktop (That has done much video processing expirments), seems to have a codec issue:
AVIcodec (http://avicodec.duby.info) reports an AVI file created by VS9 is fourCC type dvsd, but has the red slash/circle thingy.
Ulead seems to scan and create the file, but it is not loaded into the video seleciton window (edit tab)
VS9 gets an error "Catastrophic", when trying to access the file.
real player and WMP cannot play the file
Quicktime CAN!
I think I have a codec problem. Can anyone confirm, and tell me how the heck to fix this?
1am... 1am.. must sleeeep must sleeep.
Tia!

I don't use AVICodec and don't know if it would ordinarily include the Microsoft DV codec in that list, but it's not there.
Try running the following from a command prompt or the Start -> Run dialog:
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\QDV.DLL
That will re-register the codec. If the file is missing, you'll have to re-copy it from the original OS CD.

codec cleanup?
Hi -
Thanks for the responses. I am new to VS9, which has gotten me interested in getting AVI working on this PC. I believe that it actually has been messed up in regards to AVI for some time... I've always just resorted to using quicktime.
The PC has been around the block a few times in regards to video manipulation, so it's had many codec packages installed and removed, as I've tried to convert this to that.
I have tried the REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\QDV.DLL, without any success.
I suspect I need to clean all my codecs off, maybe all my applications, and reinstall.
Does anyone know of a good way to do this, short of reinstalling Win XP?
That, or simply getting my codecs in the right order to let VS9 use the proper one?
Thanks, everyone, for the responses! greatly appreciated.

No luck
Another night wasted.
I have a feeling my codec set is trashed. I've used sherlock, mmview, and gspot to try to figure out what the difference between my laptop (working) and my desktop (not). Gspot simply can't render, leaving me without much clue as to what the problem is.
Man, this is a pain. I guess I have to move to a windows reinstall, as I'm sure I've hosed my registry to pieces trying to get things going.
Unless someone else has an idea...
Thanks again.
