Sound being distorted

Post by monnerat »

:o

Hello,

I use for more than one year, without any difficulty or problem UVS8 capturing and editing my videos. I noted something funny today after I saved some videos: the final seconds were mute. I thought it was the original video, but hearing it in the camcorder sound is perfect.
I capture some more video and when editing I noted sound was distorted.
I didn't change the way I configure my capture: AVI files, 29.97 frames, NTSC, 24 bits, 720x480, lower field first, PCM, 44100 kHz, 16 bits, estereo
Except for a new monitor, my computer had no changes and no new software was installed.
I use Windows XP Home, have 512 MB RAM, lots of GB in my HDs, all of them 7200 rpm and an AMD Sempron 3100+ processor 1.84 GB. My video board is a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000

Would anybody have ideas/suggestions

Thanks a lot Paulo

That's a tough one Paulo - perhaps there is something wrong with the signal from your camera?

You don't mention how you capture i.e. capture device, USB/Firewire etc. But given this is a recent change then you have to consider which elements are part of the process i.e. the camera, the capture device (if there is one) are both prime candidates for the source of the problem.

It is difficult to conceive of a scenario where the software is at fault. So I believe your focus should be on the signal path from the camera read heads through to the computer storing the signal - what in that path may now be faulty? How can you isolate the problem? possibilities are:

1. try a different camera
2. try a different capture device
3. try capturing on a completely different computer

Sorry I can't offer any further suggestions - the best of luck :-)

Hi Peter, thanks.

I capture using a SONY MiniDV camcorder using Firewire. I tested capturing the same clip with MovieMaker and sound result was perfect.
I got suspicious UVS8 capture has some corrupteds file(s), but instead of uninstalling and reinstalling it I purchased UVS9 and captured the same clip again, but unfortunately problem persisted. As I didn't uninstall UVS8 I will try to do again after uninstalling.
Sound playback while capturing doesn't show any distortion. This only appears in saved *.avi file

Any suggestion is welcome

Thanks again Paulo

It certainly sounds like the VS installation is corrupt then if Movie Maker captures perfectly. Let us know how the uninstall/re-install works out. I am personally never happy with typical Windows applications - they tend to litter the entire system with files i.e. you can rarely just delete an entire directory and be confident you have erased every file that constituted part of a application. There have been detailed instructions posted here previously on exactly what files/directories need to be deleted to completely uninstall VS - it might be an idea to search them out.

Good luck,

Peter
