No sound when capturing via USB from Sony DCR350

Hi - I have hooked up my Sony DCR350 via USB to a Dell laptop with SigmaTel sound. I can watch the movie as I capture it but there is no sound at all. I have tried the various options (without much clue what I was doing) but still no sound. I have donme the same thing with the software supplied by Sony (of which I have a low opinion) and I get sound on that OK so I can only assume that it is a software setting rather than a camera setting. Help, please! This is the first time I have tried the Ulead software so it's not like something has stopped working.

A bit more info - all the system sounds etc work on my laptop. I have now fiddled at random with various settings and I get a sound during capture rather like a woodpecker attacking my machine - no similarity to the sound on the tape at all.
