Changing capture settings for DV camcorder

I have an older JVC digital camcorder and have been having trouble with the capture settings with VS8. The capturing is supposed to start and stop with the camcorder's playback, but there are a lot of bugs in that procedure. When I click capture, sometimes the camcorder starts, and sometimes it just sits there. Is there a way I can turn this automation off so that when I click capture it won't stop when I stop the camcorder? Another annoying factor related to this is the capturing stops in between scenes, and I can't find a way to disable this and just let it straight capture when I want to start and stop. Should I change modes from capturing to mpeg2 to DV? The tape I am trying to capture is made of several different recording dates, and I'd just rather capture the whole thing and edit it with VS than to have to worry about the capture process stopping in between scenes. Any suggestions?
