Print to Tape with Sony HDR-FX1

Post by ten18 »

I tried to do this for the first time tonight with no success. Device control is working fine, because the camera will start recording just fine when I start the output from MSP8. The video shows up on the computer monitor, but not on the camera's monitor. When I try to play it back, there's nothing there. I've tried printing to tape both from the timeline and from a file - same results.

I've seen other threads on this topic, but most dealt with device control issues. I'm not having that problem, but am apparently not getting a video stream back to the camera.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Have you tried Export from your file? This is a Sony-ism and I have a similar problem with my DVCAM drive. The trouble is that Sony (and to a lesser extent, Canon) have several different non-standard ways of communicating along an IEEE-1394 link and I'm told it is not possible to cater for all with all commands, as there are conflicts.

You have to create an .m2t file by using create video file and selecting the 1080 transport stream. After the video file is created you have to use the export to dv to print to tape.

You should look on Ulead's website on how to use the HD capabilities of MSP 8.

Thanks for the replies - I did create an .m2t file, but I didn't try an export to DV. Does that downres the video, or does it maintain the HDV standard?

It keeps the HD Video.

Well, the HDV preview window comes up, and when I hit "next" (to record), it just locks up. That's a bummer.

After the preview screen the next screen will have a red record button you have to click on it and the process will continue.

The preview screen will tell you the camera is recording but you will not get a picture. The picutre will be on the cameras screen.

Tyamada - thanks again for your reply. I found the procedure in the MSP8 user manual - does the record window come up right away, or is there a delay. In my situation, the display window goes to a white screen. Maybe I'll let it sit there for a while and see what happens.

Keith:

When the text in the MSP8 Record Window is displayed (The Video Is Recording To The HDV Camcorder) my HDR-HC1 cameras' display comes on an starts recording. Your camera might be different and take a bit longer but it shouldn't.

In the MSP8 Record Window you should get buttons for the tape transport, if the buttons are greyed out there is a problem communicating with the camera if you can use the buttons to move the tape position then you should be able to record to tape.

I think there is an issue with the FX1. Others on this board have mentioned that Sony has not been the best when it comes to complying with 1394 standards. I think you're a bit ahead of me - I haven't yet been able to get the record window to come up. At least I can capture and edit in HDV - just thought it would be nice to roll my edited projects back to tape so we could watch them on an HD monitor. I've been able to make some pretty good quality DVD's by outputting HDV and converting that to DVD MPEG in MSP8, but it's just not the same!! I guess we'll wait for Blu-Ray!! Thanks again for the reply!!

You might want to send an e-mail to Ulead Tech Support. From what I have read MSP7 with the HDV plugin didn't work but you are the first one to post that the FX1 dosen't, my HC1 is also made by Sony.

You might want to get a new firewire cable, I had trouble with one that would connect intermittently so I replaced it and am not having problems.

If your camera is connected properly you should see HDV IN iLINK on your cameras view screen. If you go to MSP8 Capture module the screen should display HDV OUT iLINK.

I too have an FX-1 and MSP8 but have yet to try the print to tape function. What's the pro/advantage to the 'print to tape' function?

Export .m2t to DV is the way to record back to tape after editing your captured HDV file. Print to tape function will not work with a High Definition Camera.

Export to DV will wirte HDV format to tape.

I think I will replace my firewire cable - the one I have looks kind of cheap. I'm not seeing "HDV OUT I.LINK" on the Capture screen. I also noticed that the camera does not show up in the Windows Device Manager - I would think it should show up as an "Imaging Device." Strange, because I've been able to capture video no problem, and device control seems to work OK.

With my HDR-HC1 the camera has to be in the PLAY EDIT mode to work with MSP8.

Your Camera will not show up as a Imagaging device in the Device Manager.
It will appear in the Sound, Video and Game Controllers as a A/V Tape device.

You should check your manual for the information that is displayed on your video screen or thru the eye piece. I would think you would have a indication that the iLink is connected.
