Upgrading from 2.0 to 4.0 using patch doesn't work

Upgrading from 2.0 to 4.0 using patch doesn't work
Can someone please tell me what to do. When I go to installe it, it says version 1.0 is not found. What is that about? Do I need to uninstalle the trial version of 4.0 or something?
