Smart Compositor- Can't replace background images?

I just tried to use smart compositor for the first time. I used the music video template that has like a clear blue sky (at a beach?). I can replace all of the images except for the backgound image which I believe is image #1 (they start at image #2). The smart compositor is a nice idea, but if ALL of the images cannot be replaced with user images, what good is it? Am I missing something here?

Those are canned samples some of the components cannot be replaced.

Never fear; as we speak there is a Smart Compositor Designer plugin in beta that will let you create your own SC templates from the ground up.

The Smart Compositions are in fact a set of nested timelines.
Copy a Smart Composition to the timeline and double click it, this will open a second timeline. If you double click the second timeline you get a third and sometimes a fourth or fifth.

You can then replace any clips by right clicking a clip and selecting "replace with"

Nice aren't they, I am looking forward to the plug-in.
