VideoStudio9 burning DVD problem
I have a HP Media PC:
3800+ AMD Athlon 64x2
1.0 GB memory
250gb hard drive
Intergrated ATI RADEONXPRESS Graphics
I have 115g of free hard disk space
I have loaded VideoStudio9 a few times via a purchased cd.
I have loaded the burn patch and the update patch kit.
everything work fine until I try to create a DVD and then the program
hangs the pc and I have to power cycle the pc to clear the error:
I captured my video using ADS VideoXpress (which came with version
VS8 SE)
I save my video from a Sony Handycam HI8, I save them as AVI.
here are the properties from the captured video file:
File format: Microsoft AVI files -- OpenDML
File size: 56,431,852 KBytes
Frame rate: 29, 968
Duration: 3230,412 seconds
Data rate: 1485.95 kbps
Compression Microsoft YUV
Attributes 16 Bits, 640x480
Toatl frames: 96,809 Frames
Compression PCM
Attributes 48.000 khz 16 bit, Stero
Total samples 155,116,800 Samples
PROJECT FILE PROPERTIES:
File Format NTSC DVD
File size 4,267,646 KB
Duration 3839.606 Seconds
Video type MPEG-2 Video Lower Field First
Total frames 115,073 Frames
Attributes 24 Bits 720x480, 4:3
Frame rate: 29.970 Frames/sec
Data rate: Variable bit rate (Max 8000 kbps)
Audio type: LPCM Audio
ToTal samples: 184,301,101 Samples
Attributs: 48000 hz, 16 Bit, Stero
I capture the video as AVI.
I then edit the video.
Set project properties to match -- YES
Open compression tab select media type "NTSC DVD"
move quality slider to 100
Then I do the following:
Select SHARE/Create Video
select custom and then set Save as type = "Mpeg"
Select options Select "Compression" tab Set Media Type = NTSC DVD
name and save and it take a long time
Then I try to burn a disk:
Select New Project
Select Share/Create Disc
Add video
click on the gear shaped icon, change MPEG settings, customize, compression tab
media type already selected
Add/Edit chapters (I click on auto)
press next and edit title label
then I click until I get to the last screen, and it just hangs there
the hour glass keeps turning, it never tells me disk information
(available/required) that stays blank, and I have to power cycle
the pc at this point.
am I doing something wrong, or does this software have a problem
with my software ?
i even tried using the video that are in the right when you bring VS9
up and I still get the same results.
but if i use SONIC myDVD to burn a DVD I can burn my project file
thanks

Some things came to mind reading your post
I recently purchased the upgrade from VS7 to VS9 and loaded the update.
You said you loaded the burning pack?????? I thought that burning pack was for older versions of VideoStudio.. Check to ensure you were supposed to load the burning pack. I can see this could cause problems.
One other suggestion is to review the "recommended procedure" in this forum. Apparently it resolves a lot of issues. I am buring successfully with VS9 using the recommended procedure except I use LPCM audio.

VS9 create disc
by burning patch I ment CD/DVD Burning Engine Update 3.6.17.246.
I wait 5-10 minutes when I get to the last screen, where I get the hour glass spinning, If I bring up the task manager it says VS9 is not responding and I can not stop the process unless I reboot my PC.
I did forget to mention that I have 2 dvd drives in my PC, one is DVD
writer and the other is just a reader, is there a chance that the program
is looking at the wrong drive ? when I had VS8 SE loaded that was able
to burn a DVD..

Tony,
Try GeorgeW's suggestion. 5-10 minutes is only a short period if you are creating a motion menu. the windows task manager may say that the program has hung, but give it a while longer. I have found that the windows task manager does sometimes give a false report when the computer is working at full capacity.

waiting
I even tested this with one of the Ulead clips on the right, I think it
was a 5 second clip, and I added no chapters, no titles and I waited 7 on minutes and gave up on the last screen where you are suppose to click
on burn.. Am I suppose to wait longer then that even for a 5 second
clip ?
thanks

rendering
when you say the movie is rendering, is that when you click on
share/create video ? if so yes, I let that complete, it takes a long time
I just leave and come back a couple of hours later.. the system hangs
when I try to burn a DVD with the video I created from share/create
video..

lastest attempt
here is my latest attempt of trying to get VS9 to burn a DVD.
1. cleanup tmep files
2. uninstall VS9
3. delete the folloeing folders:
C:\SmartSound Software
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\MyDocuments\Ulead VideoSTudio
C:\ProgramFiles\Common Files\Ulead Systems
removed MicroSoft .NET Frame
updated windows installer 3.1 with patch KB893803
reinstalled VS9 and the update pack
reboot the PC.. started VS9 picked one of there videos on the right.
followed the recommened procedure and the system still hangs on create
disc. Is there somewhere else that files are hidden that I will need to delete so I can do a total fresh install ?
thanks

Tony,
You are going wrong at the first step because your capture device (ADS VideoXpress ) is simply not capable of video capture at DVD standards: 720x480, 8000kbps. You captured at 1485kbps, which can only give terrible quality. You can't restore quality that isn't there by increasing the bitrate later in project properties or burn properties.
Stop reinstalling VS9. Don't bother with any VS9 updates. Start over.
If you want to capture analog video you need a good analog capture device. I have used ADS Instant DVD2 (about $150) successfully for all my analog captures. It has an internal processor that converts the video directly to Mpeg2. Then follow the procedure that is recommended in the top post of this forum.

lower the quality
I'll lower the capture quality and see if that makes a diffrence, I will look
into updating my capture device as soon as I get a chance..

Tony,
Does you Sony Handycam have an i-link (ieee1394 firewire) connection.
If so the best method to capture is by connecting with a firewire cable.
I can see you are from NTSC land (USA). Where I live - the UK you can pick up a firewire kit from £15 GBP - I think that works out to about 30 dollars, from PC World. The kit contains a card for your motherboard and the cable that connects your camcorder to it.
If not then I used to connect my older camcorder to my Hauppauge TV card and capture that way.

no firewire
no firewire connection, just the rca connection (yellow, white, red).
The big issue I am having is that it did burn a DVD with VS8 SE
so I would think it should also work with VS9.. I can use Sonic which
came on my PC and burn a DVD with a video created by VS9 that causes
VS9 to hang. I'll try to lower the quality on the capture and try again
under VS9.

tape ?
