VS8 Crashes during edit
I just upgraded from VS7 SE to VS8, and it is crashes during edits. The most common crash is when a video clip is scrolled using the slider on the playback window. The clips were captured using capwiz from ADS, in MPEG 2 DVD format.
I Have installed all the recomended patches and added 1 GB of memory to a total of 1.5 GB.
3.2GHz P4 800 (HT enabled)
1.5GB DDR-3200 RAM
200GB & 160GB 7200 HDDs

The system was exibiting the same problem before adding the memory. Allthough the additional memory did seem to reduce the frequency of the crashes. The memory is configured as dual channel with 2 new 512 MB DDR's and the system sees no problem with the configuration.
There is still copies of VS7 SE and MovieFactory 2SE installed on the computer which I have not tested yet.
Thanks for the help

I have tried several things assocated with the virtual memory settings, including resolving a conflict with norton antivirus which kept overriding my VM settings. The system stability seemed to improve but it still crashes. Task manager shows that the crash occurs when the Commit Charge nears the physical memory of 1.5 GB. There seems to still be a memory leak in VS8.0.1.
Any more suggestions???

My memory usage levels off at about 600 MB and does not increase further during playback. Your symptoms are the same as I experienced before the 8.01 update. In fact, every time I clicked on the preview jog control, memory usage would increase and VS would crash after about 100 clicks. Are you sure you have 8.01 installed? Check the "About VS." Mine says 8.01.0000.
Maybe different video properties can trigger the leak. What are your properties? My clips are almost all mpeg2 intermixed with jpeg images. I use the following properties:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8192 kbps)
Audio data rate: 224 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo
Are you using exotic transitions?

Thanks for the response.
I do have the patch installed, the about VS is 8.0.1.1000.
I am using video captured by ADS Capwiz in MPEG.
The properties are:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 3999 kbps)
Audio data rate: 224 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo
The most common transition I use is Crossfade.
Thanks

UVS7-8 Crashes
I used to experience frequent crashes in either VS7 or 8 whilst anti-virus program was active.
Because video projects are particularly memory intensive, it became clear that a number of utilities needed to be shut down in order to avoid crashes. Visiting Pacs Portal at http://www.pacsportal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
provided the tool needed to determine which StartUp items could be safely turned off in Systems Configuration. It soon became clear that both Nortons Anti-virus and Zone Alarm could also be turned off while not forgetting to delink the internet connection.
By totally restricting the number of programs/utilities running in the background has resulted in continuous successes with Video Studio, a superlative program. And once a session has been completed, then back into Sys Config and turn back on the anti-virus and plug in the internet cable.

Update.
After working on several aspects of the vurtual memory I discovered that the Norton Antivirus was resetting the VM file size during the boot process. By removing the start with windows boot from NAV the desired file size can be retained.
After setting the min and max file size to 3072Mb which is 2x the actual memory, the memory leak seemed to stop, and the VS8 is now stable.
Thanks for the help

Great! Your detective work paid off. I'm especially relieved that the memory leak problem is Partially exonerated.
However, a good memory management algorithm would work well even for "inappropriate" swap file settings. I think you should still report this to tech support as a serious memory leak problem.

Another Update.
Well the memory leak came back. By refering to the systems log under the manage system option found be right clicking on my system, I found that several of the application failures referenced a usbdvr. I disabled the ADS Instant DVD 2, and the problem has not come back.
Hope this does it!!!

Bill,
That's curious because I have usbdvrnk.ax (4/15/03), usbdvrsplt.ax (2/19/04), and usbdvrsrc.ax (2/4/04) in my Instant DVD Folder but have never experienced the memory leak problem that you have. (But - I can't capture IDVD2 with Video Studio, either - I use CapWiz....)
I would just add this info to Ulead Tech Support.
