I am using VS8 with all updates and "tweeks" that are recommended.
I am using: Win XP SP2
Athlon 2 GHz, 1GB RAM, ATI All-in-wonder 9000
80 GB System HD; 40 GB Video HD ( dedicated )
I am copying a previous DVD made with VS7 ( about 50 min. ) by loading it into the "insert media files into the timeline" icon in the lower left corner. It seems to load just fine, although it breaks the movie up into 15 minute segments. When I go to render the video file it locks up my computer about 11-15% into the movie. Anyone have any ideas? I have tried to match the properties up with each other before rendering.

Try monitoring your memory and CPU usage using the Task Manager. These should be fairly low if your Project properties match the Create Video File properties.
I assume that you have lots of unfragmented free space on the target hard drive and all background processes are stopped.
It might help if you would post a complete listing of your properties.

Many of the systems with specs similar to yours are based on VIA chipsets, some of which have serious problems such as data corruption during IDE transfers. Make sure you have up-to-date 4-in-1 / Hyperion drivers installed.
Also, you may want to keep an eye on your processor's temperature, it may be overheating. Tools like Motherboard Monitor and HMonitor are perfect for this.
