MPEG4 usage in MF4?

Post by The Old Timer »

I was a little surprised to find that MF 4 could open & play MPEG4 files like DIVX & XVID. Can this program actually be used to do anything useful with these sorts of files since I presume that doing things like adding chapter points & creating menu's are probably not possible? Can you even create a crude menu that would allow you to jump to seperate files on a disk?

If you Author them for disc (with Menus and such), they will be converted to comply with the disc standard (either mpeg1 or mpeg2).

Doing that would I suspect just increase the file size back & make the whole exercise rather pointless. It would only be of use if the MPEG4 file was your only sorce of that video.

I may be wrong but from what I've seen of MPEG4 its simply a format that you would use to view things on your computer only, or pass on to someone else via the internet due to its very small file size and excellent quality.
A standard stand alone DVD player deals with VOB files which are in fact MPEG2 files (well almost) where an MPEG4 file is perhaps misleading as it is a form of AVI.

I have downloaded a couple of TV episodes in MPEG4 format and found that they are a bit jerky when played on the computer. BUT after "de-compressing them" into MPEG2 format they are as smooth as a TV Broadcast.

Many of the new stand alone DVD players will play MPEG4. The file size is often a quarter of MPEG2. The quality can be really quite good & you can still have your surround sound. I have yet to see any programs that have menu's titles, chapters or subtitles although they may exist.
