Video Studio 7 Rendering problem

Post by Glenn »

When I play back my rendered movie (Mpeg format) the video and audio do not align. This is not consistant throughout the entire movie but only happens on certain clips :( . the audio and video do however line up prior to rendering the entire movie when viewing it in the time line.

Hi Glenn,

versions of Video studio prior to VS9 had more issues with audio sync that often related to SmartRendering of MPEG-2 clips. (which would occur if you saved trimmed clips with SmartRender enabled)

Another cause might be dropped frames in your captured footage.

What is your workflow? Is the source analogue or digital? How are you capturing it? Are you working with avi clips on your timeline or MPEG-2?

MPEG-2 was never intended as an editing format, and due to the nature of the compression, it's hard for programs to maintain audio sync and make smooth joins between clips and transitions. If it's at all possible for you on your system, it's usually less problematical to work with avi clips and follow the "Recommended Procedure" workflow outlined in the sticky at the top of the forum.

Having said all that, if it does turn out that you have some problem clips with dropped frames, and you can't recapture them, you may be able to correct them.

Thanks for your reply 2Dogs,

My experience with video editing is limited so apoagies for any stupid questions. I can confirm though I am using Mpeg clips captured from an analouge video camera. Would it be possible to render my Video Studio Project with VS9 or would the video/audio sync problems still be present due to the origin of the project being from VS7?
I have checked all of my Mpeg clips prior to entering them into the time line (VS7) and all have no problem with Video/Audio sync. Some of my clips are previously rendered clips but still dont encounter Video/Audio sync errors until such time as they are entered into the timeline and rendered together with additional clips(as explained by Sticky).
I suppose I am searching for a quick fix method without creating any more problems along the way. Any basic tips would be appreciated, and will attempt to follow the reccommended prcedures as per your last reply.

Cheers,

Hi Glenn,

better a stupid question than one not asked! Needless to say, none of your questions are stupid.

Does the out of sync comprise an increasing audio lag? (with the sound getting progressivley further behind the video)

I don't know for sure if VS9 will be do a better job with your MPEG-2 clips. From what I've read, however, it's supposed to be able to deal with the "frame redundancy bug" that creates extra frames in any SmartRendered MPEG-2 clips. You can't see these extra frames by stepping thru frame by frame in VS, but may be able to spot them in a freeware program called "VirtualDub". You should be able to find it by Googling the name and other posters may well jump in with a link. VS9 does not solve the phenomenon of "macro pixels", however, which show up at the junction of clips or clips and transition effects in rendered MPEG-2. Again, VS will not show the affected frames, but VirtualDub will.

You might try rendering your project with no SmartRender enabled, to see if that makes any difference.

If you haven't tried rendering the project in VS9, you should download the trial and do so. If you have any backup image software, create an image prior to loading VS9 in case of problems. Without such software, you might use Windows System Restore to create a restore point for the same purpose.

If you then still have sync problems after rendering in VS9, and you can't recapture the affected clips, you might have to split the audio and doctor the clips. I've not had any experience doing that, but again if the need arises, you can bet there are a bunch of forum members who could advise on their favoured method.

Good luck!
