Timeline of subtitles

Post by skpl »

hi everyone,

i've got a strange problem with the timeline of the subtitles in the edit menu. i used a program subtitle workshop to convert an .srt subtitle to ulead dvd workshop subtitle. when i tried to open the new file the timeline of the subtitle was correct, and the subtitles were displayed right on the text table (hebrew sub). but when i tried to preview it, or to save it the timeline of the subtitle went all wrong. when i tried to open the exported sub i noticed that the frame rate was changed from 23.986 to 25. i've tried to create a new track with the same timeline and blank text and save it as a new file, but then again the timeline went all wrong and the framerate had changed to 25 fps. anyone know a way how to solve this ?

Shalom

This could simply be a reflection of the age of WS2. When the software was written, nearly all videos were 25 or 29.97 fps. I could well imagine that these were the fixed values, especially as project settings only offer those.

I've successfully changed PAL subtitles to NTSC simply by exporting them and changing the frame rate in the header using NotePad and reimporting them. Have you tried that?

Although the file is given in the hh:mm:ss.ff format, it actually converts these values to the number of frames from the start in the interpretation. At the very worst, it should be possible to cheat the system by converting the frames automatically (e.g., in space-delimited Excel), For example, if you want a sub-title to start at, say, 00:37:12.09 at 23.986 fps, this would be frame 53,546. If the file were recorded at 25 fps, the time would be 00:35:41.21 for this frame number. This would be a PITA of a workaround, but I think it should work and could be done quite easily. If using Excel or Quattro Pro, I think I'd import on one worksheet and, on a second worksheet, I'd copy in everything from the first one, while manipulating the times to integer frames and back again. This should not take more than a few seconds for even a large file, once you had worked out the algorithm (I'd jot the frame numbers on the first worksheet in two columns after the text, just as a check, as we have to work in bases 60, 23.986 and 25 to do the arithmetic).

well well you are truely the Devil
i did tried the first soultion after i had searched the fourm for a similar problem, but the timeline remained the same. but if i'll change the timeline from scratch with excel it would do the trick. i can only hope that an update for the FPs issue will be released soon...

thank you for your time, and for your answer.

I would have doubts as to whether you will get an update for WS2, but I have informed the appropriate guys at Ulead of your concern.
