I'm constructing a project that consists of more different (standard) projects. Which I use regularly.
After importing a project in the time-line of the main project it appears just as "one clip". I would have aspected the projected to be imported while maintaining the construction. This is at least how it worked in the MSP7 version.

You now have some workflow alternatives you didn't have before, so fasten your seat belt
#1. if you import as a project to the timeline using Insert it gives you the projects result, as you have discovered.
#2. if you import from the File/Open menu you get the project intact and editable, but the conversion may take a few with complex ones. Also; some titles may mess up because of differences between the old and new titler.
#3. import using File/Open to the Main Timeline then create a new timeline. This new timelines tab will appear next to MT's with the default name of Timeline 0 (this can be changed from the context menu).
Now try this: use track-select + shift to select all (or some) of the tracks in the imported project on the Main Timeline then and cut/paste them into Timeline 0. Delete what's left on the Main Timeline that you don't want to recycle.
Now you can still modify the imported project on Timeline 0, but import just its result to the Main Timeline as a Virtual Clip by right-clicking MT's tab and selecting "Insert from timeline >".
Kind of having your cake and eating it too
Using additional timelines to prepare content for assembly on the Main Timeline as Virtual Clips can be a very useful feature.....
