Capture ?

Post by rs02931 »

I'm new to ulead vs8 so forgive me if I'm missing something obvious. ( I have read ALL the Recommended work flow procedures, as well as most of the posts of the past month or so) I'm using a sony vx2000 digital camcorder to capture both vhs footage as well as digital video from the Camcorder. Under Capture settings it shows : SOURCE = Sony~MSDV and format = DV, if i change format to mpeg it reverts back to DV??? is this correct. is capturing always using only DV???? do you only make those option changes when you start the editing process?
Also - transfering a VHS tape to DVD with NO editing except possibly an opening title what would be the best settings?
Thanks in advance for any help, and again sorry if I'm missing something obvious.

You should be able to chose the capture file format as Mpeg2 or AVI. Select "Ulead DSW Mpeg" plug in Tools menu/Change Capture Plug-In

This might also be caused by using a USB1 connection from the camcorder to the computer. You should be using the firewire connector.

capture?

Post by rs02931 »

Thanks JC.....

I am hooked up to the firewire connector, but i was set to ULEAD DIRECT SHOW CAPTURE PLUG IN. Now set for ULEAD DSW MPEG CAPTURE PLUG IN, and all the options appear in the "options" panel in the CAPTURE tab.

So IF i am simply transferring a VHS tape to DVD - and only adding a Title to the beginning would I be tter to capture in MPEG2???

Thanks,
Bob S

Yes, you can capture to directly to Mpeg2 if your computer is fast enough - >2.6 GHz and you have lots of free space on your hard drive and you shut down other processes, such as internet, auto Windows updates, etc.

MPEG2 takes less disk space than DV or most compressed AVI formats, so it is actually a good format to capture in if you are pressed for space, provided you have a fast processor.

Given a fast processor and 512MB or more of RAM, if you intend to do little or no editing of the captured video, MPEG2 is a logical choice for capturing and editing, because it will save you from having to transcode from another format to MPEG2 for DVD creation.
