Failure of clip image replay

Using XP Pro and high spec harware plus Panasonic MV-MX500
Capturing is no problem. Playback of project is also straightforward. However, when I try to play back any individual clips the screen is black, although the program is moving through the clip and the sound is unaffected. Bizarre!! - but why??
