Jim,
Unfortunately as advised by PM I tried the patch and my computer locked up. Maybe the patch was Windows 2000 specific to suit your system whereas I'm on XP Home.

The problem has got a little worse now. I restored my system and then resinstalled VS9 without the patch and it crashes now whenever I try to start a project
I read somewhere there is a process to clean all the registry so I'll look for that and try again. I guess we're now off the subject as to the merits of upgrade as I need to fix this now before I can upgrade anyway.

Hi George,
this is just a casual long shot from behind the tree over there....
I notice you have an ASUS motherboard that might allow "intelligent overclocking". If you are making use of this feature, you might try disabling it in BIOS to see if it helps.

Hi 2Dogs,
I have checked some screen dumps of my BIOS and I can see Performance Acceleration Mode [Auto]. I didn't have the problem until I installed the patch from imjay. Jim was very helpful but I believe the patch was for W2000 and may have caused the problem on my XP machine. So not sure that the PAM would be the issue?

I fixed my crash problem. I referred to an earlier post http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=3550
and I deleted the Windows Installer and no more crashes. When deleting it told me certain programs may not work but no problem so far. Anyone know what this program does (other than cause problems)?
Anyway now I can get back to the original question. I'll try VS6SE and how it can work with DVDMF4 before I look at upgrading VS6SE
Thanks for your input so far.

Hi George,
glad you fixed your problem.
If you ever do any tests, however, I'd be interested to learn of what if any performance benefits you get from using the Asus "PAM".
My own O.E.M. motheboard doesn't have any such options in BIOS, but I was recently able to OC it by about 15% with a trialware program. That gave about the same order of improvements in rendering speed, but unfortunately messed up any kind of video capture from my camcorder.
Apologies for going off topic!
