I am trying to capture video to record DVDs. I've had no problems until I had to trash a hard drive that included the operating system - thus requiring a reinstall of the OS (W2K,SP4), the software for my ATI Radeon 8500DV and VS 8 and VS 9.
Now I find that when I want to capture video in DVD format, the default is AVI and when I change it to DVD, it changes back to AVI immediately.
What am I doing wrong?
VS8/9 Capture format will not change from AVI

Hi,
First are you trying to capture digital or analog? I'm assuming that you are trying to capture from a digital camera, due to the format changing to avi. VS recognizes when you try to capture from a digital source, and sets the capture to AVI. This in reality is DV-AVI.
Now the above is not true if you are using a capture device, and possibly capturing analog video from say a VHS...

Further to what Vidoman has already said, I was wondering if in fact you were in fact setting the capture format as 'DV' when you thought it meant 'DVD'. But VS8 and 9 both revert to 'DV' when you try to select 'AVI' so it couldn't be that.
Instead, have you checked Tools > Change Capture Plug-in to ensure you have the MPEG capture plug-in chosen when you are trying to capture to DVD format?

It appears that Ken Berry has come closest to the answer. My Capture plug-in device is Ulead DirectShow Capture Plug-in. There is no other choice. So where do I get an MPEG plug-in? How do I install it?
As for Vidoman, I could have been more clear but I have been doing this since VS5 (and despite that the board reports I've been a member since 9/05, I've been on this board for three years - it's always been significantly more helpful than Ulead support). I could have been more clear that I've been burning DVDs in DVD format since VS5. Indeed what I'm trying to capture is a mix of DV from a camera (more recently) and S-video from an aged TiVo.
So, I've been able to capture in DVD format since I first installed VS5. This problem only appeared in the last couple of days - since I had to replace my primary hard drive.
With that in mind, I hope people will re-read the initial post and if the lack of MPEG capture is the problem - help with that.
Thanks.

Hi
I realise you have been forced to do a re-install, but I feel you may have to do it again.
Run the install shield and try a ‘repair’.
The capture driver is provided with the installation software.
Read this page from ulead:-

Unless your ati capture card driver is at fault?????????
