Out of Sync Sound

Post by BandOnthe »

I created an 1 hr 59 min avi by using the capture feature of MSP 8, feeding the analog signal from a VHS player through my Sony PC115 DV Recorder, connected to my Laptop (see below) via FireWire. Properties of the captured avi are as shown below:

Microsoft AVI files - Open DML
25,147,589 KB
29.970 fps
7140.674 s
628.04 kbps
DV Video Encoder - type 1
24 bits, 720 x 480, 4:3
214,006 frams
DV Audio - NTSC
48,000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo
342,752,352 samples

I got no errors when capturing this file. When I view it using WinDVD (from my hard drive), the sound is properly synchronized throughout the 2 hr film. Moreover, when I use Sonic MyDVD to create a DVD file, the sound is synchronized throughout as viewed with WinDVD from the file on my hard drive.

I originally posted on this board concerning audio sync problems using the MovieFactory "export" feature in MSP 8. I have since tried working entirely within MSP 8 Video Editor by either adding the avi to a project and using the "Create/Video File" (for an mpeg) or just using the "Convert/Batch Convert" feature, for the DV-2 avi below:

NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 2
Interleave audio for every 1 frames
PCM, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

In all cases, when opening the created or converted file with WinDVD, the audio is one or two seconds ahead of the picture by the end of the film, completely unacceptable for a finished video.

I've gotten advice and an interesting reference

http://www.adamwilt.com/DV-FAQ-tech.html#LockedAudio

but nothing which allows me to correct or even work around this problem. It's easy to blame the avi, the hardware, etc., but the fact is: MyDVD, a much less expensive application, takes the original DV-1 avi file and makes a DVD with no sync problem.

Hi Run

I rarely capture VHS nowadays. unless it's very rare & unrepeatable stuff.

In MSP7 I had a couple of VHS tapes that caused synch problems.

My Fix was to cut the file on the timeline every 5 minutes (every 20 mins would probably do it OK, I'm just playing safe).

It's very easy in MSP 8, pressing U to cut the file on the timeline when you drag the wheel in the Preview window, hopefully this will fix your synch problem as the audio will be resynched at each cut (Hopefully ;))

It worked for me anyways

Regards
