Burning DVD in PAL format

Post by time101 »

I guess my first question should be...should I expect that if I burn a DVD in PAL format, that I should be able to play it on my computer?

The video was captured in NTSC and when I burn an NTSC DVD everything is fine. I can play the video on my DVD player and on my PC. However, I need to send a copy to friends in the UK. When I select "PAL" when I create a disc, everything seems to go OK, no error messages. But the resulting DVD is strange.

When I try to play it using InterVideo WinDVD, all it will play is the photo album consisting of JPG files. No matter which video chapter I click on, it still goes to the album. And then, the album stops and restarts when it gets to the first "photo album" transition effect.

When I try to play on InterActual Player, I can see the video. However, I cannot go to a specific chapter; it always starts at the beginning. Also, the buttons which control skipping the the previous or next chapter are disabled. The photo album exhibts the same strange behavior of stopping at the first "photo album" transition effect.

Any ideas?!?!? I've burned two DVD's in PAL format with the same results. If my friends were to play this on their DVD player in the UK would they have the same playback scenario as I have on my PC?

Thanks!

Hi Tim

Most Dvd players will play Ntsc type discs.

I am in England and therefore Pal.
I have a two dvd players both play Ntsc ok. Although one of them I did have to alter some properties in the players set-up menu.

Send one of the Ntsc discs to the UK, if they play it will save you a lot of time.

If you want to convert the disc do it from Share Create Video File, then use the resulting file to burn to disc.
Re-coding the disc in the Share Create Disc section may cause problems.

Hope this Helps

Dear Tim,

I can fully endorse Trevor's comments from my own personal experience. I've made several DVD's to send to relatives in England. I first made a PAL disc, but discovered that NTSC discs play fine in almost all players. When you convert to PAL, there's also an inevitable quality drop off, so it's rarely worth the hassle.

Hi Tim et al.

I have the same issue exactly. I am sending to NZ and so my first test was in NTSC format, however they reported that it would only play in black & white on the TV DVD Player - so I figured it was an issue. I then proceeded to create 3 more test versions in PAL format (all starting from NTSC when capturing - I cant seem to capture direct to PAL) and they while they didnt play in my US based TV/DVD Player very wel (same problem with the slideshow and chapters being ignored as Tim) I have mailed them off anyway, and am waiting for a response.

Ive read quite a bit on this forum about this problem on the other end of the process (i.e. when capturing) but not when viewing

Does anyone know of the solution to this?

Thanks
M.
