VS9 won't burn DVD (Finish)

Post by Colorado »

I have followed the tips and suggestions and still can't get VS9 with the latest patch to burn a DVD - it keeps erroring out at the end of the burn- stating a device problem along with entire string of error codes - yet I can exit the program and burn in Nero - it works fine their - so I have determined it is a VS9 problem.....

Sony DRU-800 DVD
WIN XP with all updates
Burns fine using NERO Burning Software....

Original video file was a DV Type 1 - created a video project and saved a video file (MPEG) (Just as sticky instructions indicate) - I then exit the program and then start it again - then go straight to create a disk - just as the sticky instructions state - I match the file/mpeg format exactly - but it still doesn't work! I've rebooted etc... I have wasted over 8 DVD's trying to get this to work - it actually starts to burn - but then bugs out and I can actually put the disk in a DVD player and it plays the first 5-20 seconds and freezes.... It's putting the files on the disk - but won't close it or finish the process.... I'm pretty fed up when something should be pretty straight forward for a program like VS9 - but there seems to be constants postings and problems with it.... Ideas?

Colorado,

I have the Sony DRU-800A DL Drive and have burned a 2.5 hr video with no problems, I did use the Ulead CD/DVD Burning Pack http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs.htm to make sure I have updated VS9. Also, have you checked to see if there is a firmware update for your drive?

My setting are:
VS9

NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: 8264 kbps
Audio data rate: 224 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo

Of course the data rate is different for a video that long. When you go to create disc after you have created the video file, you don't have to exit the program, once your file is ready to go just click on "new project" and go to the share step.

I hope this helps.

Colorado, please use the Search button and see if uninstalling or disabling Nero's InCD utility solves the problem.

Problem Continues

Well - I updated my DVD's firmware to the most current and I updated yesterday to the most recent VS9 Update Patch. I only see the one update patch and no DVD specific patch. I also checked on the InCD application and I do not have that specific app loaded - I never loaded that specific application with Nero. I tried it again with a very short 250 mb file and got the same errors.. Here is my file info and error info..

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

Error #1: The target device might have some problems - try again or reboot (5213)

Error #2: UDVDBURNMgr.dll get burning engine RC String Fail. Report ID 5213 Error: (0x8004145D) DVDR-DAO-SPTI-2a-02-02-30-05

Any thoughts?

Any experience with Nero Mix removing that - doing a search - someone mentioned that....but I don't have InCD But to have to remove a program to make another program work is a bad product in my opinion....

Hi Colorado,

Unfortunately, as a programmer I wished I could say that software programs are perfect - but we all know they aren't. Added to that mix, the interaction between programs/drivers/specific machine configurations etc etc can make for a pretty murky mix which at the end of the day will probably never be solved by ULead's Tech Support (at least in your case). Certainly our combined knowledge at the moment is to "check for InCD being installed" :-). From what I have seen on this forum I seriously doubt they will even spend any time on your problem even if you report it to Tech Support - being able to duplicate a problem is usually a prior requisite to fixing a bug - something that is not likely in your case.

My suggestion is that if you can burn a DVD with Nero then by all means stop creating disc coasters and just go with what works (the "Recommended Procedure" after all is recognised as a "Work around" for problems in VS8/9).

Personally I always perform the "share" step to an .iso file (image file) - I then use either Nero or the "VCD DVD Disc Image Recorder" utility that comes with VS9 - it is unclear from your post whether you are using this approach or not - it certainly sounds like you are trying to use VS9 (as opposed to ULead "VCD DVD Disc Image Recorder") to burn the DVD - which is something generally recommended against on this forum. From memory of the Recommended Procedure it recommends making an either an Image file and (possibly) a "Create DVD Folder" and then using either something like Nero or the VCD DVD Disc Image Recorder to burn the resulting file(s) to DVD - it doesn't recommend using the "Burn to Disc" at any time.

The Recommended Procedure is the combined results of experience gleaned from using VS8. VS9 has apparently not "fixed" any of the problems which caused individuals on this forum to formulate the Recommended Procedure - which is definitely a shame! :-)

Hope this has helped,
Peter

Thanks Peter - good response and I appreciate your comments. I removed NERO Mix to no avail. Yes - I was using VS9 to burn which apparently isn't the best way to do things... But NERO works and I will just go that route.... Thanks!

The advantage of going along Peter's suggested route of making an ISO or DVD folder (Video_TS) is that you can use VS9's menu-making facilities, which IMHO are better than Nero's, even the latest Version 7.

I'll be honest - I'm a novice and not sure how to do that along with getting menus on the disk at the same time etc.....and VS9 documentation is about the worst I have ever seen! I'm about ready to chuck the entire program and find another one or just use it to edit video and buy something else to actually burn DVD's or stay with NERO... Thanks for you help and suggestions!

Hi Colorado

I have had no problems when using VS to burn a disc. May be I am fortunate.

If I have only one dvd to burn I will use the Share Create Disc, adding menus and finally hitting the burn button on the last page.

If I have several dvd to burn I will create a Disc Image File (Iso) file first, then use the ‘Vcd/Dvd Disc Image Recorder’ to burn the disc.
Does this approach work for you.

As you are having problems, go through the process to create a Disc Image File or Dvd Folder.
You can play the Dvd Folder on your pc to see the results, prior to burning. (this should avoid making so many coasters.

I know you are setting your properties to match, but have you tried changing the project properties before going Share Create Disc.
Video Studio will automatically change your project properties to match your clip properties.

1---- Start a NEW project (file / New Project)
2---- Insert your video file to the timeline (the one you are going to burn)
3---- Remove/delete the clip from the timeline (you have an empty project/timeline)
4---- Share-Create Disc
5---- Add Video
You should have no need to change any other properties.

To see the process from 1 and 2. File – Preferences- tick ‘Show Message When Inserting First Video Clip’
When you see the message select ‘Details’ to view then select ‘Yes’

Hope this Helps

Just to state the obvious, always burn a test disc to DVD RW first, to make sure that things are working, before making a bunch of bird-scarers, whatever your burning program.
