Sound Card options

Post by Greg »

I recently rebuilt my editing machine, and am now looking at sound card options. Unfortunately there is a bit of a monopoly locally, and most suppliers can only supply creative cards. I have, however, found someone who can supply me an Aopen AW850L, as well as two Asonic cards the 8738 and 8768 and a Chronos card, CMI 8738.

The question is, does anybody know these cards? are they any good, or should I keep looking?

Regards,
Greg

My experiences with Creative cards border on being horror stories. Poor drivers, weird hardware conflicts and now the class action suit from last spring because their 24 bit support wasn't 24 bit. Ick.

Dunno those cards but those CMI chipsets are ancient.

I've had very good luck with the old Turtle Beach Santa Cruz (aka: Videologic Sonic Fury), Hercules Gametheater XP and the new M-Audio cards because of their low PCI bandwidth and good drivers.

If I were you I'd look for online sources of the M-Audio cards. You might also look for them in upscale music instrument stores that cater to the audio mixing/editing crowd.

M-Audio is a subsidiary of AVID, the outfit that makes high end editing systems;

Yes; at least two models are quite reasonably priced, streeting out at < $100 USD.

Thanks Terry,
Have found a supplier that can give me an M-Audio Revolution 7.1 Little bit more than $120. For the price of the card I could buy about 60 Big Macs with large fries and a coke! Out of curiosity, how many could you buy with $120?

I can get the Revolultion 7.1 for about $70-$80 USD. The Revolution 5.1 is $15-$20 less.
