can't burn dvd with vs9

Post by sleeper »

I'm getting a vhs tape to my computer thru a sony dcr-hc85 camcorder without any problems. Or so it seems. I'm editing without difficulty also. I have printed out and am following the procedures from this forum. I create a video file first. That takes 5 or 6 hours. I check to make sure my project properties are the same as my burning properties. I'll list these at the end. my timeline is clear. I feel like I'm following the "burn phase" steps in order.I still create coasters. I do have to change my kbps from 8000 to fit the disk. and my audio is mpeg. When I go to burn It says it'll take while. Usually 8-10 hrs. I am using a sony dru-810a dvd burner. Here are my preferences: file type mpeg ntsc drop frame 29.97fps mpeg file 24 bits, 720x480 ,29.97 fps. lower field first dvd-ntsc 16:9 video data rate variable (max 8000 kbps) audio, 4800 hz stero mpeg layer 2 perform non sq. pixel rendering, frame size standard 720x480 display aspect ratio 16:9 The ccamcorder changes the signat from analog to digital. I'm using VS9 and I capture to DV-1 I'm sorry if it is confusing this is my first post. If there is a better way to post this pleast let me know. I used 2 encoding passes and I turned off smart rendering. Thank you for any help you can give me.

A couple of initial observations: first, if you are getting the message that the process will take a while, then it is obviously converting the mpeg-2 you put into the burning module. It shouldn't be doing that. I suspect it is because you are changing the bit rate. I assume that you captured the video in DV Type 1 format, did your editing, then created the DVD-compatible mpeg-2 file at the default 8000 kbps. Is this correct? But when you put that new file in the burning module, you knew it would not fit on a DVD so changed the bitrate for the burning project...right? VS9 would then have to convert it to a lower bitrate then burn it, and that is where problems creep in, like out of sync audio. If you know from the start that you are going to be burning, say, 1.5 hours of video to a DVD, then you should be using 6000 kbps in the Share > Create Video File stage (or 4000 kbps if you want 2 hours). These lower bit rates are in any case all that are probably needed for VHS source material, even if it was captured in DV format. If you have then produced a DVD-compatible mpeg-2 at 6000 kbps or 4000, then you also burn with the same bit rate. Make sure you also check the box beside 'Do not convert compatible MPEG files' in the little options cogwheel icon in the bottom left of the burning screen.

While it should not have affected the quality of the burn or audio sync, I note you are using mpeg audio, which is not part of the NTSC DVD standard, and so may not play well or at all on some stand-alone DVD players in NTSC land. You might want to think about using Dolby AC-3 which is about the same size as mpeg audio, should play on just about any stand-alone DVD player and is handled by VS9. LPCM audio is part of the NTSC standard, but will produce much larger files, which means less video can fit on the same disc.

Thank you avatar for your reply. You are correct in all of your assumptions. I will do as you suggest and cut down my rate. Thanks for the info on the audio too it is appreciated. Since I have already put the vhs into the computer at a rate of 8000, is there a way to split the video into 2 or more parts. It is about 2and a half to 3 hrs. long?
