Media Studio Pro does not recognize my ADS Instant DVD usb 2.0 import unit. Do I need a driver?
Is there a better import unit/card for my new HDV camera?

Use the IEEE-1394 port with about any cheap IEEE-1394 card. ADS makes several. IEEE-1394 has a faster sustained throughput than USB2 anyhow.
As far as recognizing the ADS USB unit; have you tried using the DirectShow capture plugin?
