Record Voice in VS8.01

Post by bunclark »

I'm able with the use of a microphone to record voice .wave files using other software on my PC, but can't get VS8 to give my any sort of reasonable volume. If I set all controls to Max and Shout down the Mic it records onto the track, but not satisfactorily.
Am I missing something like an audio plug-in?

Maybe you can double click the "Specker" icon on the task bar\click "Options" \properties\ switch to "recording", just check on Mic to try again.

Whilst your in the audio properties look out for ‘mic advanced’ mic boost.

I had a similar problem and never really got round it with VS 8. I use a third party program (Nero) which has a decent sound editor, in which I can increase the recorded volume of my voice for voiceovers virtually to any level I want, without distortion. If you can acquire such a program, then you will resolve your problem, though I agree it is not a great solution...

Where are you plugging the microphone into bunclark - what you descibe sounds a bit like a microphone plugged into a 'Line-in' socket and not a microphone socket. If that is the only input you have you can solve the problem with a microphone pre-amplifier from your local Maplins.

Thanks Guys, But.

Tommy, As said I'm "able with the use of a microphone to record voice .wave files using other software on my PC" - Settings are correct.
Trevor, I'm using the best settings.
Ken, Yes, I've got Nero Wave and have used it. But the file is already distorted due to having to shout.
Brian, Got mic plugged in correctly.

Right Guys n Gals, let's try again - HELP, I can't get VS8 to give me decent voice-overs. :?

My point about using Nero was that it was a substitute in which you could actually record your voiceovers from the start, rather than just amplify existing ones...

Bunclark,

I do voice-overs a lot but record with a little flash-memory gizmo. Then I clean them up (and mine need it!) with my audio editor, and finally insert them into the right spot in my Timeline.

I've tried recording with my computer and never had success: same problem as you. But I see no reason to use the computer, since I'm going to want to go over the clip in any case. I suspected my problem was a cheapo mic but now I don't care.

Alright, I can actually help out on a question! The project I'm working on has a bunch of voice overs in it. I've got a really crappy, cheap microphone and I was sure that I needed a new mic. I couldn't get very good sound with VS8s voice recorder so, before I went and dropped a lot of money on a new fancy mic I decided to try an old Audio capturing and editing program that I used to use. It's called Goldwave and its a free program (free version has some minor limitations), I started working with that and now I've decided I can get good enough voice over sound for my amateur project. It has a couple of different volume fixer buttons. The one that comes to mind for what you are doing is Maximize Volume. It makes it fit the needs of the project perfectly. You should try it.

Come on Ken, Kebrinton, & Ponderer, !!!

The whole idea of me wanting to use VS8's facility of 'Record Voice' is that you should be able to do 'Voice-Overs' while your Video Clip is running, allowing me to Lip Sink if I wanted to, or at least make the commentary be perfectly in line with each frame while the video runs.

Your suggestions of using other ways are appreciated, but we shouldn't have to.

Thanks again, JB.

Right Guys n Gals, let's try again - HELP, I can't get VS8 to give me decent voice-overs.

Your attitude is beginning to get to me bunclark - No-one HAS to help you - we get nothing out of it - we do not work for Ulead.

In your first post you said that you were able to use other programmes on your PC to record your voice from your microphone - but then in a later post you say that you also have to shout into your microphone when using NERO.

Are you able to record on any software on your PC using the microphone without shouting into it ?? .

It might also help if you told us a bit about the microphone - maker/type

I wish I could help but I can't. I have a fairly simple headset mike and I haven't had any trouble recording voiceovers with VS8.
Maybe if we compared setups or something?
Are you sure there's nothing accidentally muted in the master audio setup panel (windows) - happened to me once..

From Trevors earlier comment "Whilst your in the audio properties look out for ‘mic advanced’ mic boost. " This is probably this issue. Cheap, non amplified mic input has to be boosted in order to hit the mark.
