VS9 Capture problem - please help

Post by Karin »

In early Nov I posted a request for help because of being unable to capture in VS9 (having upgraded from VS8), but unlike everyone else who has had the problem, uninstalling MS Windows Installer 3.1 made no difference (I had Installer 3.1v2 which I removed anyway).

Unfortunately as no-one replied I think I must be alone with having this problem. I have been in touch with Ulead and after several emails have now reached the stage where they want me to try Sytem Restore, then revert my computer back to the date prior to installing the VS9 upgrade for the first time. I find this prospect quite daunting and have no idea how to do it. Would it make any difference, is it worth trying?

Am I unique in not being able to Capture in VS9 after removing MS Windows Installer 3.1v2? If so I shall resign myself to using VS8 to Capture and VS9 to edit, and hope one day a patch will fix it, but I still feel mad at having wasted money on this upgrade.

Any ideas at all of what to try would be very welcome, or even messages of sympathy! Need some support to stay sane!

I guess using VS 8 for the capture and VS 9 for the editing seems to be the only workable solution here. I would not do a system restore to a much earlier date if I had installed other software during that period or wasn't sure if I did. It could cause all sorts of grief with different programs and you could find yourself in a right royal mess. It can be done though if you want to go through with it. Depending on how far back you have to go, it may be an awful lot of work. Using VS 8 for capture is certainly the lesser evil. There is no difference in the quality of the capture because the so called "Capture" is nothing else than a transfer of data from your DV Cam to the PC in an AVI wrapper. VS 9 capture would get you exactly the same data so, why mess with your system more than neccessary?

Hi,

I tried to upgrade from VS8 to VS9 last week and found I had the same problem as you described. No answer from Technical Support... Not willing to remove Windows Installer I decided to see if I could find the problem. With Windows Installer in log mode it showed that the problem was missing files in SmartSounds.

Check to see if you have the following file:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SmartSound Software Inc\Libraries\Master Libraries.sxl

If not then we have the same problem...

Here's what I did next:

Uninstall SmartSounds
Uninstall VS9
Download and install SmartSounds 3.0.27 from
http://www.smartsound.com/support/qxpar ... pdate.html
Install VS9
Restart computer

The problem lies within the install script which looks for Master Libraries.sxl and if it is not there then it screws up.

Let me know if this works for you, or if you need more help..

I still have the McAfee Trojan problem so that's next...

Good luck / IanM

Thank you for your responses re my VS9 capture problem, and apologies for late reply.

Heinz Oz: I didn't go for System Restore, I also felt I could get into difficulties.

Ian: I checked for the SmartSound file and I do have it.

I am still in regular email contact with ULead Support. Still hoping for a solution! In the meantime using VS8 if need to Capture.

best wishes
Karin
