well, it could be one of a few things, i have Norton, AVG, Avast, Spybot, Spyware doctor, and Aluria Security center installed. I dont know if VS9 does thins on my notebook, havent tried it on there yet.
Microsoft said that my BIOS were out of date, and im in the prossess of updating em, so maybe that will fix the problem. if not, guess ill have to try premiere pro, or media studio 8, or jus keep using vs8 XD, but id like a prog with less lag and a little more ummph to it then 8 has.
ill post if anything new develops or if the BIOS update fix's it.

One problem you can be experiencing is running more then one antivirus programs. They most always will cause confilcts. It is common and recomended to run more then one spyware/adware program, but not antivirus.
Now if your antivirus programs are running in the background while you are trying to capture/edit video, then yes things are going to run slower. I used to run NAV and no longer. I just use AVG now, and disable it while doing any editing.
I do experience unexplained sudden complete crashes, where my computer will reboot. However I know it's not Ulead, because it's done it while running other programs. I have alot on my system, doing graphcs work and video editing.
Hope you get it sorted out...
Regards
Ron

Dear geowil,
make sure you cover the basic bases first! I trust you do regular defrags, and disc checks - in view of the list of installed programs, you probably do, but it's an essential starting point, to eliminate disc problems as the source of your troubles.
After that, look in the Event Viewer logs - they will often point to the culprit. You can often pick up mis-installed programs, for example. Just investigate the long list of red circles with a white cross in them that you may find in the event viewer "application" log.
Good luck!
