How do I make a clip go forward and reverse, back and forth?

Post by julia_lunquist_84 »

I have film of a person walking, and I'd like to find an effect that will let me make him walk forward, then backstep, then forward again, backstep again, etc. How would I do this in VideoStudio 8?

You can't with VS 8. There is a freeware on the net called VToolbox, written by a German guy named Klaus Horst which will allow you to reverse a video. Unfortunately, I don't have his website, but you might find it with a Google search...

I did a search for this utility, but had no luck. I found a link to Klaus Horst's website on the Pinnacle forum, but it appears that the website is no longer available. Does anyone have a copy of the software that they could send me, or place on a website for download?

I have now found the web address for VToolbox. It is http://home.t-online.de/home/klaus.hors ... ox_de.html

It is all in German,. but the download links are quite clearly marked, and when you go to set it up, you get the choice of opting for English. It is a quite simple program to use, but IIRC. you must use DV/AVI video captured with the Type 2 Encoder, which is a problem for a lot of people with VS 7 or 8, it seems. I am one of the lucky ones who have no trouble with it.

Ken,
THANKS for the link.
I've downloaded and installed Version 1.10 and can play my .AVI files in the preview window by inserting them into the Input/Output sections.
BUT, now I'm lost. Because there are no English instructions can I please ask you to tell us how to get a file to reverse and save it?
Thanks in anticipation JB.

Hi
All of the panel should be in English, if not press setup, top right, third button down.

Select the ‘Output Avi’ browse a location and give the new file a name.

Tick the reverse box in the action section.

Hit the start button at the top.

I downloaded it, and inputted an AVI file w/ type 2 encoder. But the play button and the start/stop buttons are faded out. It won't let me do anything.

Hi Julia

I have only just downloaded the progran today.
The program seems to be limited to the tye of Avi compression

I managed to get Avi working with Indeo and huffvuy compression
Itwill i assume support others.

Use VS to recode your Avi

The 'Start' button does not become available to you until you have also specified an output file name at the very bottom of the window.

To get VToolBox to work.

Try this FULL procedure. - It worked for me.

(1) Insert/Load .avi file using the 'Input.AVI' button.
(2) Insert/Load the same .avi file using the 'Output.AVI' button, renaming it.
(3) Select 'Codec' or leave at 'no compression'.
(4) Click 'reverse' box.
(5) Hit 'start button' and you should see your .avi file playing backwards and saving.
(6) Find the folder with the renamed original file, and play.

God bless you all,
Regards JB.

I must be doing something wrong, but I can't figure out what it is. I did exactly what you said, but most of the buttons still remain grayed out. Start, Stop, Codec, and the Play button at the bottom are all faded out. Won't let me select any of them.

I need this to and I tried it. I got the Error: No video stream in AVI file message. I'm assuming that means it doesn't like the "flavor" of my AVI file? Any suggestions?

AFAIK, the DV/AVI clip has to have been captured using Type 2 encoder...

Thanks for the tip Ken, but here's what I ended up doing and VToolBox is converting my clip while I type. I hope your suggestion is more straight forward. I went looking for a way to re-compress my AVI file that had been captured with UVS8 (apparently Vtoolbox does not like this type) and came across VirtualDub. VirtualDub didn't like my clip either until I downoaded and loaded the Panasonic PDV codec, which apparently lets any program load AVI 1 or 2 video. Then VirtualDub could see the clip. Then I had to recompress it. I finally ended up using the DivX codec for compression. For some reason the recompressed avi file didn't work when VirtualDub used the Huffy codec. Anyway, once it was all converted, Vtoolbox did just fine. I don't know how UVS8 will like the final product, but at least now I've got every conversion tool known to man to try to make it work. 8) Thanks for all the help guys.

I'm glad you found a solution, even if it was a bit round-about. Have you actually tried using VS 8 Type 2 Encoder to capture your DV/AVI? I admit a lot of people have trouble using it, and it probably has something to do with their computer architecture and resources. But if you want to give it a try, then on the capture page, with capture set to DV, click on the cog wheel icon about half way down the left hand side of screen. That gives you the option of capturing either Type 1 or Type 2.
