how to hear sound and more

Post by ernielinehand »

I am new to the web board and new to Ulead software. I received Ulead DVD Workshop SE 1.21 with my purchase of a Canopus MPEGPROemr encoder. I am trying to transfer vhs to DVD. I have my settings on my Canopus encoder to transfer at mpeg2. When I open this file in Ulead and go through the steps to burn it gives me the message that the mpeg audio wont work. I cannont change the audio while transfering from my encoder. I am transfering in stereo,48khz and 256kbps. I have read some other postings regarding the same or similiar problems although I am not sure if they apply because most responses refer to Ulead 2.0 and nothing refers to UleadSE. I know these are not the same but I cant find anything that has to do with SE(software patches and such) on the Ulead web site. Thanks for any help

What's the exact message?

Is the message that "it won't work", or does it say something like "mpeg audio is non compliant..."

If it lets you continue, you can go ahead a burn the dvd, but what it's trying to say is that mpeg audio is not standard for an NTSC disc (it's ok for PAL). So if you are creating an NTSC DVD, then some NTSC DVD Players will not be able to play the mpeg audio -- alot of newer models can handle mpeg audio fine -- especially if it says it can playback VCD's.

Thanks for the explanation George, you are right that it says that "mpeg audio is non compliant". How do I change the audio file to something more compliant with older DVD players? From the postings from other people, it appears it depends on which version of Ulead you have. Is this the case?
Thanks for the help!

Dolby Digital or LPCM

Post by GeorgeW »

To be compatible for an NTSC DVD, you would either need to use DOlby Digital (AC3) or LPCM audio.

The problem with LPCM audio is its size -- it takes up much more room than DD or mpeg audio, but it is compliant. DD would be the best because it is compliant, and it is compressed -- which means there is more room for your video :)

George

p.s. I just remembered that you are using DVD WS 1.21 -- in which case I don't think you will have the Dolby Digital (AC3) option. At one time, Ulead offered a Dolby Digital addon to DVD WS 1.x, but I'm not sure if that is still available. Their newer 2.x versions (Full and Express) do include Dolby Digital support (decode/stereo encode).
