?DVD snatches to .mwv of war movie to Veterans website

Post by ussyorktown »

I am the webmaster of ussyorktown.com The Yorktown Association owns the rights to "The Fighting Lady" movie, winner of the documentary Academy Award for 1945.

I have a DVD copy of the movie and I want to post snippets of the war footage onto our website at ussyorktown.com

Which product should I buy to convert dvd snippets to .mwv so that shipmates and the rest of the world can see our history of service during WW2.

VideoStudio will be a good option to capture the footage and trim it to what you want, then output to WMV format. The biggest problem I see in your future is the copy protection on the DVD that you have. If it is a production DVD, I expect that it has copy protection on it. Most programs, including VideoStudio, will see the copy protection and stop your capture. An option would be to use something like DVDShrink to copy the DVD to your hard drive, without copy protection, and then import the video into VideoStudio from there.

Since you have the rights to the movie, this would not be illegal, but for normal use it does challenge the law just a bit.

I've downloaded the trial version of it. I can't figure out the controls. It appears to have captured it just fine but how do I get 15 or 20 :30 second clips peeled off from the movie and then save them as .mwv format files?

I can't give you a full tutorial on how to use VS9 here, but you can read through the posts and get a good understanding on your own. Here is a basic run through for you.

You said that you have captured the video. Next you just have to highlight what you want to separate out.

- Go into the "Edit" mode.
- Drag your clip into the storyboard at the bottom of the screen.
- Click to enter "Project" mode. (This one is the step I always miss).
- Move the "jog slider" to the start of what you want to clip.
- Either click the"Mark in" or press "F3". This sets your starting point.
- Move the "jog slider" to the end of what you want to clip.
- Either click the "Mark out" or press "F4". This sets your end.
- Go into the "Share" mode.
- Click "Create video file"
- There are four WMV formats to choose from. You'll have to experiment to get what you are looking for.

There are a lot of other things you can do, including fine tune the WMV file that you want to create, but that is a tutorial that I do not have time to write. At least not one I have time to write for free.

thanks for your help. i got as far as going to Share and Create Video File.

Those options do not light up when I want to create a wmv format segment.
I am thinking that the trial version doesn't permit this.

Either that or I am missing a step in that the options to transform into wmv won't come up.
