What is contained in MediaStudio Pro 8?

Post by DSHolloway »

Two discs, but it appears that all that is on the bonus disc is trial software, am I correct or am I missing something? Is Video Paint not part of the Pro8 package, I can only access a Trial Version! With only a limited knowledge of the previous software I am yet to get to grips with no separate timeline for the 'effects' What is the opinion on the feature of inserting effects on the same timeline as the clips, is it considered to be more user friendly? Views please.

Video Paint and CG Infinity were taken out of MSPro 8 and re-issued as VideoGraphics Lab;

Those who have used MSPro for a long time know that with most of the upgrade budget going towards the edit and capture modules there has been little improvement in CGI and VP over the years. Moving them out as a separate product at least gives them a developemnt budget of their own, so hopefully the new features people have been asking for now have a shot at becoming real.

As for the single timeline paradigm, I find it much more flexible than the old A/B/Fx system found in MSPro, Premiere 6.x and other old style editors.

It also gives the advantage of being able to apply transitions on any track. Nice for doing transitions between titles and other overlays with more than a crossfade effect. Previously this required rendering these overlays separately.

Thanks for the info Terry Stetler. re Video Paint I had the feeling that was what had happend. Have found some minor dificulties with not having a separate time line for effects (e.g fitting a fade to black at the end of a clip with no following clip overlap and picking & editing a title clip), perhaps it is my inexperience with this software showing.

Assuming your default background is black, you can fade to black of a "lone" clip using the Overlay options in the Production Library. When you have loaded the 0-100% (or whatever) onto your clip, you can use Effects Manager to adjust where you want your fade to start and end.

To edit a title clip, you have only to double-click on it, on the timeline, and it will come up.

I just insert a black colour clip (or whatever colour I want to fade to) and drop it on the timeline overlapped with my source video. This activates the crossfade (if you haven't changed the default settings) and lets you do a real easy fade to black.

I had a bit of a tough time at first figuring out how to work with transitions (I do a fair bit of picture-in-picture and greenscreen work), but now that I've experimented a bit, MSP8's methods are significantly better than the old ways.

I really do like this software...
