Once upon a time, along time ago

Post by tonyjer »

Hi Everyone

I used to burn SVCD and VCD many eons ago (long before I had a DVD re writer and got into all the complications associated with DVD creation)

In those happy days it was generally accepted that you get about 40 mins of SVCD and 90 mins or so of VCD on a CD.

I have just created a 22.5 minute project consisting of WMV clips downloaded from the internet. When you chose the SVCD option when creating the mpeg video file you get a video file which is 2.3Gb in size and too big to fit on a blank CD.

Is this right for A 22.5 min project?

(If you chose VCD then its no problem as the 1150kbs generates a much smaller file-about 230KB)

Is my memory playing tricks on me? The reason for using SVCD/VCD is that I have about 100 blank CDs!

Many thanks

Dear Antonio y Anna,

there must be something amiss!

As you say, VCD uses a constant bitrate of 1150 kbps, but the default SVCD profile in VS9 uses variable bitrate, max 2375 kbps. If you use your own custom SVCD settings, the maximum allowable is only 2600 kbps.

For your 22.5 minute file to end up as 2.3Gb, the bitrate would have to be well over 20000 kbps! There has to be something wrong.

Even if you'd selected MPEG-2, the maximum allowable bitrate is 14000kbps.

Have you created an SVCD file from the wmv file? If not, perhaps you could do a test on a smaller sample wmv, and check the resultant file properties.
