Ulead has hit rock bottom with PI11!

I've been a faithful user of PhotoImpact since version 7 and never have I seen anything so screwed up as version 11. I'm a professional graphics designer and I simply can't do my job anymore unless I work in Photoshop (which is hopelessly bloated).

Either PI11 won't open (sometimes it takes as many as three tries) or it closes for no reason and I lose my project. I've actually walked away from it - meaning I'm not even using the software - and when I return I get the dreaded "PI has an error and needs to close" message. I've tried this version on three different computers and I get similar errors.

I hate to say it, but if Ulead doesn't issue a patch soon, I may find myself going back to Photoshop or purchasing Paint Shop Pro. This is simply ridiculous.

Do these 3 PCs have something in common?
Processor or chipset brand? Graphics card from one manufacturer? Antivirus, antispyware or firewall applications? Some hardware specific drivers (TV cards, capture cards), SCSI devices?
What laguage/version of Windows?

Other than Windows XP Professional SP-2, there are few similarities between the boxes. One is an HP desktop, the others are handbuilt.

The HP has Intel Graphics onboard, one has Asus motherboard with onboard SiS graphics, the third is a Tyan board with AGP SiS 64 card.

The HP has an Intel Pentium 4 processor, the others have AMD Athlons.

The HP is running Symantec AV 10 Corp, the others are running the latest McAfee Suite.

As you can see, there's little in the way of similarites here.

If you are advanced PC user and have a minute to spare, could you go to www.sysinternals.com, download RegMon and FileMon (free, no installation required) and run them before PI to check for a file or setting that may crash PI?

Yes, I usually do get PI started, although sometimes it take two or three tries. When it won't start, my failure is usually while initializing a u32***.fio.

My biggest problem is with PI just "having to close" for no apparent reason. You don't get the opportunity to save what you have been working on. And...you don't even have to be working in PI when this happens.

This problem with .fio files when loading... some ppl here got the same problem and afaik no solution.
Seems all you can do now is to send reports on crash.
You may try to contact Ulead's support (phone, they do not answer emails) or ask for refund...

I had no problems getting an email reply. Have you made sure it's not your ISP filtering them out?

I can not contact the tech support the 'usual' way as it requires product registration. I can not log onto my account to get to my registered products. I can not register for the second time for the same serial.

I have tried many public addresses form Ulead's site and even tried contacting Element 5, but no success (Element 5 replied).

Yes, ISPs ignore Ulead.

Currently I serously consider switching from PI and VS to software by another company. It may be not as good, but it's not all that matters.

I had a similar problem trying to register to this forum. I use AOL and after submitting the registration info, could never get the email confirmation. So this forum is littered with four useless member profiles.

I contacted Ulead with the problem and got the (expected) "check your spam filters, etc" even though I explained in my trouble report I had already done that.

Anyway, I got a Google Gmail account and registered here in about a minute. So there does seem to be an issue between Ulead and AOL. Neither seem to care.

This is pertaining to the crashing problem PDMan has:

I have had this very same problem. What I found out was that PhotoImpact looks for two things on your system. A compatible printer and an internet connection. If you don't have a printer default setting that Photoimpact likes then you get exactly as you described. I had two computers networked, one with PhotoImpact installed and other computer had the printer connected to it. My work around was that I had to give Windows XP on the computer with PhotoImpact a default printer other than my networked printer, such as Microsoft Office Document Image Writer as my default printer. This worked. When I wanted to print I would have to use the drop down box in the Print Settings of PhotoImpact to switch to my networked printer everytime I wanted to print a copy. Not a big deal. One other thing I had also found that if I have my internet connection turned off then Photoimpact tended to crash. I had to uncheck "Check Uleads Web Site option in "File - Preferences - General".
