Capturing from recorded Digital TV

Post by scotty »

My daughter has an obsession with Noddy. So much so we have set our Sky+ box to record it every morning. This saves onto the hard disk which is rapidly filling up. So to generate space and make it easier I thought it would be so easy to transfer to computer and burn to DVD.
Unfortunatley the box will not just transmit the MPEG file, you have to use the analogue video out. I started off saving to my Sony DCR-TRV33E onto digital tape and then transferring via VS8. Editing went ok (after a few self induced errors) , preview had a few stutters but that is to be expected, generate a DVD.
I sit down proudly showing my wife my handy work and play the DVD! unfortunately any rapid movement just comes across as jumping or stuttering whilst general views are fine.
I have looked on this forum for similar items none quite match what i am doing is the problem:
a) Transferring from 16:9 widescreen (Sky+) to 4:3 (the camera setting)
b) Transferring to tape first then capturing
c) Something in DV-AVI to MPEG conversion

I have done a project recently using home made video captured by the sony (4:3 mode) which worked out absolutely fine.

I can alter the camera to 16:9, I can also get it to do AV-DV in line conversion. Although when I tried that on Sunday my camera decided to get the now infamous Sony CCD black screen of death so I have now had to send it off to get fixed.

Project settings are;
PAL 25fps
DV-AVI type 1
12 bit audio (i know this isn't ideal but hasn't caused problems before)
4:3

MPEG conversion
variable 8000 kbs
LPCM audio
quality 70%

I have tried putting anti flicker on but this doesnt seem to improve things.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Scotty

My first thoughts would be to check the ‘Field Order’

Digital Source uses Lower Field first.
An Analogue source would normally be ‘Upper Field’

If you have captured via Firewire to Dv-Avi from your Sony then you most likely used Lower.
There should be no re-coding during capture, you have no field option, you will get ‘lower field.
Check the ‘Options Cogwheel’ prior to capture. You will only be able to select the DV-Type, 1 or 2. Use Type-1.

Capturing from an analogue, the footage is recoded during capture, you have to set the capture properties.
This is where you can select the field order. (options ‘change field order’) I am afraid it may be a case of trial and error.

When you do Mpeg conversion, I assume you mean Share-Create Video File. Select Pal-Dvd as the format, not Mpeg 2.(this will give Frame Based as the field—not what you want)
If you require different properties-- use the ‘Custom’ option or make your own templates (tools—Make movie manager)

Hope this Helps

Hi Trevor,

Thanks for the reply. I can not try the direct conversion at present due to the sony problem currently being fixed. I agree I assume the direct conversion comes in as digital (lower field) but may be not!

I did convert to MPEG by selecting PAL DVD via the custom option, however I did find that there was a field issue, I redid one of the scenes, but only viewed it on windows media player not on a final DVD, as it did not seem to make any difference. I must admit I don't know anything about field order other than to select lower for digital!

I have to sit and wait now for the camera to be fixed but I think the direct conversion may be easier and I will have to check my field order. Thanks again for the reply
